BrewDog Libertine Black Ale
BrewDog Libertine Black Ale
Rated 3.550 by BeerPalsLibertine Black Ale is a 7.2% wickedly decadent black beast of a beer that has been hammered with the epic Simcoe hop. With a drinkability that defies its colour and depth of flavour, Libertine delivers a dark hop bomb combining the west coast hop awesomeness of an IPA, the dark and indulgent malt flavours of big stout with a lightness on the palate that bellies the punch that this beer packs. Bags of flavour and loads of hops. We intend to bottle some of this batch for those not lucky enough to make it to a BrewDog Bar to try it. ABV from 7% to 7.2%

Aug. 2012: Shared bottle at local tasting. Black colour, ruby in the highlights. Moderate beige head. Nice hoppy aroma, also moderate roasty notes. Roasty and hoppy flavour, a solid bitterness throughout. Also coffee notes. Somewhat more roasty than other "black IPAs".

Pours opaque sable with a fluffy and fairly thick tan head, and a peep of garnet light at the bottom. Note of burnt hops reaches the nose first, followed by roast malt, evergreen, and a hint of mocha. Charred hops lead the flavor, followed by smoky malt, mocha, and subtle earthy tones. Texture is firm and smooth, if not too fizzy. Get your libertine on and go barking mad!

Pours out 100% black with a thin tan head. The aroma is full of roasted malt and hops. The mouthfeel is better than average but thick for a ale. The taste although slightly bitter is interesting.

Sampled this on tap on my first visit to the Ottawa Bier Markt. Pours a dark brown colour with copper highlights. Beige head with decent lacing. Beautiful fresh hoppy nose. Nice dry mouthfeel with a little tart. Hop grass taste over mild roasted malt with sweet notes. Light bitterness lingers. Quite a nice brew overall, but the roasted malts are a little hidden by the hops. Good for some I guess.

At Bistro L'Autre Oeil. Pours a small brownish head and has a dark brown appearance with ruby highlights. Ok lacing. Nice cocoa and hoppy aromas. Flavours are raisins, plums, dark chocolate, roasted malts. Some earthy type hops, not as dominant as expected, but still well balanced. Medium bodied. Fairly excesseive carbonation. Pretty good stuff, maybe a tad too pricey.
