It’s no secret that it gets pretty cold here in Colorado. So early on in the brewery’s history, our brewmasters wanted to create a beer that would do the trick on a snowy winter day. Today, we craft our winter wonder with roasted malts and dark. Belgian candi sugar for rich caramel and toffee notes. It’s perfect on those winter days when you’re stuck inside.

Pours clear mahogany with a decent, if not persistent, light tan head. Aroma starts with roast malt and adds hints of caramel and wheat. Toasty malt forms the heart of the taste and supports a caramel tone plus hints of wheat and fruit. Texture is about average, but it goes down nicely. Mount one, and you should abbey pleased.

This is pretty much the newer version of what used to be Full Moon. They change the name and slightly change the recipe every other year or two, but it's still the same abbey dubbel, winter lager, or whatever that comes around Fall/Winter. I liked it better years ago, as it seems like this brewer has gotten way more macro and lost some quality. Probably will be hopping off the moon shuttle soon.

Pales in comparison to every trappist beer, most Belgians, and the majority of American Dubbels. That said, better than average for a Blue Moon offering. Nothing wrong except the overall impression of generic(ness)? Light yeast and malt and candi sugar. Not much else.

A really poor imitation. Bold mahogany colored with a small sudsy textured, off white head that settles far too quickly. Very thin ringlet is left. The profile is singularly unimaginative. Sweet malt.

Part of their Brewmaster’s seasonal sampler for winter 2013-14. Pours a clean copper colour with a creamy-fizzy off-white head that stays quite a while and leaves thick lacing. Mild roasted malt nose with hints of spices. You can taste more the roasted malt but the finish is quick. A little sweetness from the caramel notes. Not a bad ale, but not even close to being an Abbey.

There are so many variances of a Belgian ale. Some light, some dark, some strong, some weak, some hoppy, some malty. This is definitely one of the dark, weak, malty variety and it's really good. I don't care who makes it, it's done well and it was quite enjoyable. Malty, plummy, toffee, medium-high carbonation with a lingering sweet finish. Really quaffable.
