Ed McNally has Irish blood in him, and in 1986 he wanted a beer that warmed it. Irish brews are the biggest and boldest on the planet. McNally's Extra is not to everyone's taste, but it has attracted its devotees, including the late beer connoisseur Michael Jackson. He ranked McNally's among the best of all beers he experienced, calling it "as proud an Irish Ale as can be found anywhere."

This is one good beer. I had it recently at a pug after sharing a pitcher of coors light. What a fantasic beer, especially after drinking the other crap. I'd strongly suggest it to all of you, it's a step-up from Guiness (IMO).

Purchased at The Beer Store in a Big Rock Brewmaster's Selection 12-pack (with the Traditional Ale, IPA and Grasshopper - 3 bottles of each). Pours a dark amber colour with an off-white head, average retention and not much lace. Grainy malt aromas with nice sweet butter, nuts, toffee which all makes me think of beer nuts. Medium-bodied and kind of silky, but a bit dry in the finish. A little warming from the alcohol, with flavours of roasted malts, butterscotch, caramel and the hop showing in the aftertaste, reminding me of apples. The first sips did nothing for me, but this one does get better and better as it breathes (BTW, it was room temperature to begin with, so that has not changed since the beginning). Probably Big Rock's best brew.

Tasted in a Kelowna Pub, called 1481 Red Ale here for some reason. Smells Sweet already, malty, artificial cherry, maybe Im nuts but I get some poppyseed, Smells like swill for the most part. Little body, tastes wet (I'm saying this alot lately, I need better words for this). The opposite of dry. Mostly malts, mediocre, too sweet, garbage body.

This is a beautiful see-through reddish beer with an off-white head. Teh aroma is strong on the malt with very little hoppy tones, if any. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied, maybe a little high in carbonation. The flavour is a bit boring. More malrt than anything else with a hint of spice.

When I think of Irish Ales I immediately think of Smithwicks, and I'll continue to do so because this one isn't apt to make me forget. A traditional copper coloured elixer enters my glass with a small white head. The first thing that hits you is nothing....the aroma isn't that powerful. It's a medium bodied beer with some flavour, which after the lack of aroma surprised me. There was a definite malt tone in the flavour.

Just had this on tap today, and it's no better than the bottle which is not quite up to standards. Smells on the empty side. Sweet coffee (not overly sweet), small ammount of fake chocolate and you can sense the alcohol. Seemed pretty much black with just below average sized light brown big bubbled head (obviously not poured correctly - I expected more since it was on tap) with some pretty good retention , lots of sloppy random lacing that would not appear later on despite some cap remaining throughout. Taste is dissapointing. Sweet, sugary, slight toffee (prelavent), coffee. Not a big fan of the taste. Tasted poorly made. There also seemed to be some dry lightly roasted weak malt and a touch of chocolate. Mouthfeel was too soft and smooth - not in an appealing way. A bit tangy, slighly bitter in the middle only and finished off somewhat biscuity. It's just too soft. I know I just crapped all over this beer, but it's not as bad as it I made it appear, just sub-standard.

Just had this on tap at Melissa's Missteak in Banff last week. First time I revisited this ale in some time and I must say I picked up some more subtleties of it that I like. Tapped a clear dark amber with a smallish head. Aromas of nuts, caramel and flowery hops. Started big and bold with lots of sweet bready malts laced with some nut and caramel tastes, then the surprise... a slight peat-smoked malt after taste. A very nice medium bodied Irish ale for quaffing on the patios of Banff or in the back yard bar B-Qs

Medium brown color. Small head. Aroma is malty and sweet. Medium bodies Irish style ale. Malty and buttery. Somewhat resiny hops. Fairly sweet tasting. Mild taste, kind of bland. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean. Aftertaste is slightly bitter

A reasonably nice looking beer.crystal clear brown with a nice off white head..that goes fast. Aroma was rather average..it did even seem unpleasant like sour milk at first..but it got better. A very malty taste indeed smooth buttery taste with some hops thrown in at the end. Average mouthfeel This beer wasn't bad by any means..but it was boring doubt I will buy again.

Clear amber/copper colored liquid with tan creamy head that disappeared quickly, leaving little lacing. Aroma of malt and caramel with an added sweet, honey smell. Good balance between the hops and malt flavor and sweetness. The continued carbonation gave it a nice full mouthfeel. As the beer warmed up, it gave an even stronger and fuller flavor matching the aromas. I think it is one of the better Big Rock products.
