Bottom-fermented, dark export beer Original wort: 12.8 ° Up until the Second World War, dark beer was the predominant beer type in the Munich area. The hard water found in the region played a special role in producing this specialty. In his book “Beer International”, the world-renowned English beer writer, Michael Jackson, accurately describes the Ayinger “Altbairisch Dunkel” as: “A good example of its kind. Impenetrably dark with a golden-brown gleam when held up to the light, and with a warm aroma and malty taste, while summoning up coffee taste sensations on going down. It is brewed from five types of malt (two of which are torrified dark), and it is only lightly hopped.” It is produced using the traditional double fermentation process.

Pours clear sepia with a thick and lasting buff head. Aroma provides caramel, roasted malt, subtle spice and woody notes. Flavor yields roast malt, caramel, earthy, subtle clove and woody hops. Texture features good body and perky fizz. Come to Bavaria's dark side.

Pours a dark caramel color with a one finger darker cream colored head that lofts a while. Well carbonated. Aroma is heavy on the roasted malts and wheat. Hints of caramel and brown sugar as well. Taste is a tad oxidized and metallic but does not distract. Malted with hints of cream and caramel. Creamy body and a sticky/dry ending. Don't know the age on the bottle but I bet this is awesome fresh.

A deep brown-red colored beer with a big foamy textured, off white head rising briefly above. Settles into a medium ringlet. The nose is of caramel and grass. Molassess and grassy hops in the tasting. Light, smooth and refreshing.

A classic of the style, reminds me of my time in Munich and the dark beers of the city, sessionable and good flavor, mild but not boring. It's not over the top, has a grassy cornish aroma, light body and flavor, but certainly better than American mass marketed beers.

A must have dark lager! Smooth, caramel, a hint of coffee and a little bready taste on this offering. Not my favorite area, but this beer is very drinkable. Weak 1/4" head when poured into a .5 liter weizen glass. I was somewhat put off by this. The smooth flavor puts this beer back into get some more!

It pours a dark-brown with hints of red, light-tan head, with some specks of lacing. Aroma of bready and caramel malts, maybe some wheat, citrus, coffee, and mild spiciness. The mouthfeel is smooth and rich. Flavors of caramel malts, coffee, light hops, limes/citrus, breadiness, and spicy on the swallow. Wow very smooth and robust beer.

pours a pretty dark amber with a nice long lasting head . aroma is ok just a bit of skunk, flavor is slight toast with few hops, that fades fast, A light style of mouthfeel that would go well with nice heavy things such as canned meat - spam??

Roasty, clean and delicious dunkel. Ayinger’s Altbairisch Dunkel pours a bright, clear reddish brown. The head is creamy and pretty thick for the style. The aroma is toasty, bready malt. It smells like molasses on toast. The flavor adds in a spicy note, but the malt is really the star. Hopping is light but appropriate for the style, just enough to cut the malt sweetness. The malt flavor is big and thick for a lager. Ayinger really packs a lot of good flavor into the 5% abv. This is a very pleasant, highly quaffable beer, another winner from Ayinger.

Clear deep amber with a slight head and very nice lacing throughout. Among the very best of the dunkels. A very nice creamy sensation with chocolate/malt running throughout. A great cool weather beer.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 500ml bottle into a Pilsener glass. Appearance: On top there is a thin creamy off white colored head. It fades down to just a very thin wispy covering that leaves some nice lace rings on the glass as I drink. Its body is a deep brownish amber or caramel color. It has a good transparent appearance and light amber highlights. Smell: The aroma has a light sweet caramel or toffee malt character. Taste/Mouth Feel: The flavor has a deep buttery sweet malt with hints of sweet candy, caramel and chocolate. Hop flavor is very mild and offers very little balance. It finishes smooth and sweet with a smooth slick texture. It has a medium body and light carbonation. Notes: This is a very nice Dark Lager.
