Beer Style: Russian Imperial Stout Hop Variety: Magnum, German Hallertau Malt Variety: Two-row barley, black, chocolate, carafa 111, cara 8, cara 45, honey OG: 1.100 Alcohol By Volume: 11.03% IBU's: 60 Color: Black Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. We highly recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the Czar will continue to mature and become denser and more complex with age. 2003 - Gold Medal - US Beer Tasting Championship - Imperial Stout

What a terrific surprise. This very delicious, drinkable brew was full of pleasant surprises. The pour was smooth with an ever so slight carbonation and a perfect creamy sliver of a head that remained throughout from start to finish. The flavor was consistent from top to bottom featuring all of the best of what I've come to expect from an Imperial Stout. The initial alcohol taste quickly fades to the background as the hints of chocolates and coffees suddenly surface on the tongue. A top shelf stout I would highly recommend to any beer lover. This is not a beer for consumption during a football game. It's a two pint beer. One before dinner and one during. Then call it quits or you'll go into a coma.

Poured a really nice dark color , nice carbonation.Good flavors too it , seemed thinner than most IMPies i have had. Must be the honey that thins it out some, over all a very nice IMP Stout all the same. This one is very good.

Bottle share/ from Richard. Deep dark brown stout under a fluffy beige head and cap with tons of lacing. Deep toasted malts upfront int he nose and palate, with some sticky toffee, sweet ripe cherries, dates, nearly burnt toast, slight licorice and molasses. Big and roasty.

This is one of the worst Impy Stouts I have ever tried. It's light on colour, light on aroma, and light on flavour. Had two bottles in two different states several months apart, and the same issues both times.

2005 Bottle broken out by a generous host in Illinois during our stay for DLD 2011. Hard to imagine what a fresh sample is like, so I'll have to track one down to compare. By now this beauty had seemed to eek into more of a strong ale. Fairly light in appearance and flavor for an Imperial Stout this offered up a jumble of dark fruits, berries, molasses, moderate roast and a heavy estery yeast angle. Very strange and really comforting, it still stands out in my mind.

In pour this is very much a stout. Deep dark blackness in color. Moderate, foamy tan head. The head disappears quickly with not much lacing left behind. The aroma is roasted malt and chocolate. Nice smooth, full body. Carbonation is evident on the palate. The taste is roasted malt and alcohol, in your face bold.

Whew! Another big imperial stout. This one was not a let down. Pours a black that lets no light through. finger thick brown head. smell is aromatic, of mocha and hops. flavor is big on chocolate with a bitter finish. fairly full mouthfeel. dry bittersweet finish. overall, a good impy stout!

It pours a dark brown like dark chocolate, with a fairly thick and fine-bubbled pale tan head. Aroma is surprisingly hoppy for a stout, and it has a decent roast-coffee mocha scent. High alcohol level gives the flavor a fierce bite, which tends to mask the nice smoky "stouty" flavor. There is a touch of sweetness, as well as nutty and chocolate hints, and a fair amount of hop-like bitterness, plus a bit of a metallic taste. Texture is quite lively and jazzy, leaving a finish more like an imperial IPA than an imperial stout.

Poured a oily black with a perfect head of chocolate! There was lots of lacing as the head subsided. It smelled like a chocolate lovers heaven! It tasted malty and sweet and absolutly wonderful! It was bitter yet chocolate, as if biting into a good 76% piece of chocolate.

Aromas of chocolate, roasted malts and slight hints of cherries. Appearance was dark black body mid sized light tan cap. Good mouthfeel, creamy and it had a little thickness. Flavors were o.k. nothing outstanding, and it was a little sweet. Overall it was a decent imp. stout.
