thanks moejuck for this aged sample from 2003... it poured a bright orange gold with a frothy head. Smells of minty hops and orange peel... A medium bodied strong ale with a creamy mouthfeel. The finish was fairly rich but not heavy... No taste of alcohol and this seems to have mellowed nicely altogether after 3 or so years. A more delicate flavor than i'd thought with all the ingredients... Candyish malts are light and sweet, flavors of butterscotch, orange, some grass. Citrus hops balance well and add some bitterness. Even smoother as it warmed and the beer remained civilized through the last taste

I really enjoyed this brew. The bottle I had was an '03 vintage, which I'm sure helped out greatly. Letting all of those malts and hops blend together for a few years could only help. The pour was a nice yellow color with an average head. The aroma was slightly hoppy, with tons of malt coming through. The taste was very nice--lots of caramel malt followed by a decent amount of hops. I would have preferred even more hops, but it was very, very drinkable. There is a slight sweetness in the end of this taste, which reminded me of a barleywine. The mouthfeel here is incredible. Very thick and heavy. The finish is smooth to boot. At 10%, and not a bit of it noticeable, this is one easy drinking yet filling brew.

10.02.05 Bomber. So, this is what happens to Avery beers with some time under their belts. Well, it’s a good thing. Old and sweet with nice oxidized sherry and cardboard notes. Lingering bread and holiday spice. Nice.

A fairly dark amber with a hint of ruby. The head is sluggish and short lived. The aroma has a bit of that old fruit barleywine aroma, but there’s not enough of it there to qualify. There’s a good bit of caramelly malt in the aroma, but very little hops. The malt is biscuity with the caramel and the alcohol never really shows it’s true strength.

Sampled @ Pizza Port Real Ale Festival 2003.Pours a vibrant orange that seems to glow from the inside. Nose is full of citrus/tropical fruit notes. Very creamy palate, full bodied but not heavy. Flavor has pineapple and mango notes with a sweet front cut nicely by a bitterness in the finish. No alcohol is noticeable. An excellent brew!

Well this was a deep orange color with a nice soapy head. Smells much like a cabbage filled dumpster on a hot summer day. An interesting transition of flavor as it goes from candy like to very malty to bitter and then to a sweet sugary finish while haveing a soapy feel to it througout.

I was warned about this beer on two seperate occasions by my bud Richard -- and the second time I ignored his advice and got a pint of this at O'Brien's. It all became painfully clear once I took a full sip of this.
Extremely harsh and metallic all the around, with very little room for the hops (which don't play a big enough role in this beer) and the malt, which seems a little too convoluted to provide any sort of backbone. Things seem to improve a bit once the beer warms up, but there's just no getting around the acidic/metallic mouthfeel and taste in this beer, IMO. Rust?
Looks decent enough, and even the aroma is passable. But with the flavor profile and mouthfeel all out of whack, overall drinkability suffers immensely.
I suspect that if this were bottle-conditioned for a year or three, it might actually be a worth-while beer. But fresh off-the-tap, I can't recommend it.

Orange gold color. Medium white foamy head. Aroma is malty, bready and sweet. Touches of hops, grapefruit and pine. A full bodied strong ale. As this is Avery’s 10th anniversary ale they brewed it with 10 different malts and 10 different hops. As one might guess this results in a very malty and a very hoppy beer. The malts are nutty, fruity and sweet. Hops are grapefruity, piney and floral. Even with all the malt sweetness and hop bitterness competing against one another, this is a very smooth, nicely balanced beer. Very complex flavor. There is a touch of alcohol oilyness, but it hides the 10% alcohol very well. Nice beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

The Ten poured a golden orange with a medium off-white head that went quickly to a thin layer and laced the glass. It had a strong aroma of grapefruit / fig, caramel and some grassy hops. I was suprised by the taste - I was expecting it to be much bolder and hoppier. It was a little thin, with some grassy citrus (peach / apricot) notes up front, then a buttery malt, followed by a subtle hop finish. Not at all what I was expecting, but it was pleasant nonetheless. I didn't notice the alcohol in the taste but it had a nice warming effect. Overall a suprisingly drinkable brew.

Poured a clear orange golden color with a very small off white head. Hoppy, slightly malty aroma, but mostly hoppy. Rather bland, sweet hop taste. But I really had to dig for that, this was very, very bland. And alcohol is also not noticed. I can't decide if I like this or not. It is dangerous however being this strong, and tasting so smooth.
