A delicious winter warmer brewed with malted barley and five varieties of wheat. We've been making wheat beers since the summer of 1984. They've all been golden summer refreshers instead of dark winter warmers—until now. Anchor Winter Wheat™ is made with a unique blend of malted barley and five wheat's from Belgium, Germany, the Midwest, and a family farm just 75 miles away, where we get our soft red winter wheat. Sown in November and harvested in June, it is used in artisanal flatbreads, cakes, and pastries. In 1848, California farmers forsook their amber grain for golden fortune. By 1878, California wheat was back big-time, winning gold at the Paris International Exposition. There was even a wheat beer brewery in North Beach, one mile from our first home. Today, the robust flavor, malty complexity, enticing aroma, ebony color, and thick, creamy head of Anchor Winter Wheat™ reflect this delicious heritage. Anchor Winter Wheat™ is made with a unique blend of 2-row pale barley malt, Belgian roasted wheat malt, German pale spring wheat malt, "Midnight" and hard red wheat malts from the Midwest, and unmalted soft red winter wheat from a local family farm. The result is a smooth, complex, dark brew with a creamy, lacey head; deep, rich mouthfeel; nutty, bread-like, and subtly roasted flavors; and a crisp, clean finish. A special ale yeast provides clean flavors with hints of dark fruit. And a single hop, Northern Brewer, provides earthy, woody, and minty notes with just the right amount of bitterness.

Pours opaque coffee brown with a thick and persistent tan head. This is a wheat? Oh - it’s a Dunkel. Sehr dunkel! Aroma presents caramel, toasty, wheaty and fruity notes. Pleasing flavor sluices roast malt, wheat, caramel, fruity, and subtle spice tones over the tongue. Finish presents woody and hop tones, while body is firm and fairly fizzy. This otter get you through a winter night.

Bottle from Trader Joe in Vegas. Pours a dark brown colour with light ruby highlights. The head is frothy-creamy, beige, long lasting and with creamy lacing. Aromas of dark fruits (raisins), alcohol, spices, hints of licorice and roasted malts. Taste of apples, mild roasted malts and metallic notes from the hops. Not getting much of the wheat. Not a bad dark brew but not a fan of the metallic hops.

I sort of get where this is going, though I wasn't totally satisfied with the result. The balance was ok. Decent amount of malts...like a maltier and darker version of the Anchor Steam. Something in between their brown and porter. A tad sweeter than I prefer. Still better than most winter warmers, but not quite the style that I lean towards.

Pours inky, dark, opaque black with a thick, creamy tan head that settles to a persistent cap. The aroma is earthy, roasted malts with hints of dark fruit and vanilla. The taste is mellow, lightly bready malts with roasted malts in chase. Some mild citrus and dark fruits back. Some light cocoa and vanilla balancing with roasted malt flavor and bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. The mouthfeel is soft to creamy with a medium bodied.
