Pours a nice dark brown with a thick head. Aroma is strong and smokey with a sweet finish. Lacing is fair, taste is lighter than aroma but smoke flavor is definitely there. Smooth mouthfeel slightly oily with lingering taste. Enhance the experience with a jar of smoked almonds!

Rated Aug. 2006. Clear amber color with tan head. Solid charred wood smoke aroma. Explosive even. First sip has the sweet malts hit with a hint of hops. Then that flavor is over-run by the rich eye searing soupy smog smokiness. I think I’ve gotten used to these Schlenkerla smoke beers. Seems tamer than the Marzen. Excellent smoke beer. If you really really want a smoke beer then look no farther than this Urbock or the Marzen. You will not be disappointed. 2006 rating: 4.1 .... 2023.... this only gets better as I age: 4.5.

Bottle. Colour – clear red with brown edges, weak off-white head, excellent lacing from what head there is. Aroma –campfire, caramel, cereal grains, yeast. Mouthfeel – medium bodied, medium carbonation. Flavour – sweet smoked malt, a very weak yeast flavour. Not as good as the marzen or weizen

Pours translucent cherrywood with a thick and persistent tan head. Aroma starts with smoky wood and then leads into roast malt with hints of barbecue. Flavor yields smoky barbecue, roast malt, hints of spice and woody hops. Texture provides decent body, peppy fizz, and a smoky finish. Enjoy the ancient Bock.

Tried in Germany. Pours a clear mud-brown colour with an off-white creamy head. Notes of bacon, wood, grains, yeast, and dark fruits in the aroma. Flavour has the smokiness rather subdued compared to the Marzen and Weizen (maybe if urbock had a ‘z’) with fruit and caramel hints dominating.

As far as Rauchbier's go this is really the only one you need to know and love. It's smoked from the first scent to the final aftertaste and makes you want to go make some beef jerky and eat a lot of meat.

Beer 10 of my 12 Beers of Christmas, and this one has plenty of 10s from me. This one is like walking into a smokehouse: Nice clear dark cola brown pour with a tight head that shrinks to a creamy ring leaving tiny spots of lacing. Smoke and more smoke in the aroma with some BBQ, bacon, charcoal, slight peat, some sweet malts. Taste is liquid BBQ goodness with a great smoky overtone and pleasant malt presence. An absolutely exquisite beer with a nod to my good friend pfoxyjohn - one his favorites too. This one makes me want to fire up the smoker and slow cook some sort of meat...

This beer gets straight 8s. It wasn't my favorite beer of all time but I did enjoy it. The beer was smokey and heavy and smelled like a BBQ. I think the most attractive part of this beer was the history. I envision a beer from medieval Germany - a beer that uses the same malting techniques of of old Bamberg. A beer with malt roasted over open fire. The beer as a whole is intense but definitely an old world beer that should be tried by all beer enthusiast. This may have been one of the most interesting and historic beers I have ever had. I am glad I had the opportunity to try it but I likely won't have it again. If you see it you should try it. Specs - the beer has a 0.5-1 inch head, is super thick, has decent lacing, and coats the mouth. This beer is regarded as the gold standard of the style and is smokey and malty. This is my first Rauchbier and likely not one to be surpassed.

Impressive, far better than the marzen. A brown beer with red hues and brown coloured foamy head. The aroma is smoked pork, roasted malt, some caramel, and a touch of citrus. The flavour is roasted malt, smoke, and some caramelly sweetness. Loved it!
