(500 ml bottle). Well, any idiot can recognize that this beer has MORE aroma than (nearly) any other beer, and MORE flavour than a lot of beers. But to make a 100% honest rating, I have to ask myself: Do I actually LIKE the overpowering smell of smoked meat? Sadly, the answer is NO. I'm a beer drinker, not a goddamn sausage maker! The flavour is not quite as overpowering smoky as the aroma - at least you get a notion that you're drinking a beer and not just liquid smoked meat. Still, it tastes like something that has just been saved out of the burnt-out ruins of a brewery. Like any Marzen, it is quite light bodied (when you try to ignore the smokiness, of course). I probably have to admit that Rauchbiers are not my cup of tea - sorry, beer - but would still like to sample the Urbock as I imagine that a heavier beer would carry the smokiness better than a Marzen. Did I mention that this beer at least LOOKS good? - good head, beautiful dark copper colour.

Pours out the color of a Pepsi but with a tan head. The aroma is of old ashes from a wood fire. The mouthfeel a little better than average with the tingling of carbonation. The taste has notes of charcoal.

Bottle. Colour – clear rust colour, white head, good lacing. Aroma – bonfire, bacon, cereal malts, floral hops. Mouthfeel – medium bodied, medium carbonation. Flavour – Unlike any Oktoberfest beer I’ve ever tried. You get the light fruitiness, but it’s accompanied by a burnt hickory flavour. Quite good.

Great looking beer with a thick creamy long lasting head. Flavour is sweet and malty, fruity, bacon, which I love but not in beer. It mainly tastes of kippers which I hate, especially in beer. I can see why some would rate this highly but it's not for me.

Tried in Germany. Pours a beautiful copper colour, almost clear, and a generous white head. The smoky wood aroma hits you as soon as the cap somes off. Notes of light fruit, malt, and earthy hops also apparent. The flavour has bacon-like notes in it, as well as fruit and grains. The smokiness certainly takes away from the Marzen character.

Clear dark ruby, brown with light brown lacing foam head. Aroma is stark smokey, old barbeque wood. Tastes quite smokey also, interesting. Lasting fresh char coal aftertaste. (Velp 201403)

I really love this Smoked Beer style. And Schlenkerla Rauch does not disappoint. Amber brownish fluid holds up the off white foam that leaves decent lacing. The schnoz detects scents of hickory, meat (pork variations) and, of course, smoke. On the buds, Schlenkerla is smooth and buttery, with the flavors of the aforementioned aromas included. Some light spice notes seem to be present as well. Nice clean finish. This is a very enjoyable German Rauchbier. Have some for your Oktoberfest celebrations!

Pours a pretty thick brownish head and has a very dark amber appearance, a little bit clear. Even before pouring into glass, smokey aromas were quite obvious, kinda like that woodburnt smell. In actuality, it totally overpowers any other aroma I might get. Has good lacing. Mouthfeel slightly watery. Flavours right off the bat also has that smokeyness to it. Something like burnt roasted dark malts. Actually not offensive. Kind of reminds me of St Peters whisky beer, but better tasting. There's hints of honey, even bacon, but pretty faint. Such an odd beer aroma/flavour wise but it's pretty darn good.

My daughter brought this back for me from a 5 month education stint in Bamberg. Bacon beer!!! Okay...this was wonderfully complex, gorgeous to look at; dark, smoky and mysterious. Not really my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the quality. A must try!

pours a dark brown, almost black with a white, cream coloured head with some reddish hints when held to the light. The aroma is smoke, like campfire smoke made of pine and birch and maple. A little caramel sweetness. Wonderful aroma. The taste is much more malty the the aroma would indicate, with some toasted malt, caramel, and then that smoke. It's a got a little bitterness, but wow, that smoke. The aftertaste is dry. The mouthfeel is super smooth, medium body, and a little carbonation. A little numbing almost from the flavour. A very, very crisp clean finish. This beer is great to served with smoked cheese, sausage and crackers.

16.9 oz bottle. Pours amber brown with a medium creamy off-white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is smokey malts of the liquid smoke variety with some sweet BBQ.
The flavor is sweet plasticky (esp in the finish) caramel malts and smoke (a little BBQ) with charred roast. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and a little watery.
Overall, lots of smoke, but it's a bit thin with some off notes.
