Working with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board (LSPMB), Abita Beer announced that it has established ‘SOS – A Charitable Fund’ that will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill. The fund has pledged that 100% of all money raised will go to charity. In addition, the Louisiana Seafood Marketing Board will play an important role in advising where the money can do the most good. An advisory committee is being established as the donation process and grant procedures are finalized. The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer created by Abita. The brew, called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner, will generate 75¢ for every bottle sold. This Abita Beer is a message in a bottle...a distress signal for the troubled waters of our Gulf Coast. For every bottle sold Abita will donate 75¢ to the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill. This unfiltered Weizen Pils is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor, and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.

Right up front I'm telling you that I'm bumping this up .1-2 pts because it's for a very good cause. There. It's a pils, from Abita, which is hit or miss (mostly miss) with me. All the requisite pils qualities in this one: straw color, lemongrassy, kinda Noble Hops, decent malt bill, easy to drink. OK. It's still for a good cause people...

Clear golden yellow with slighly off white thick foam, lacing to the glass. Smell is bitter, like beer should smell. Taste although is a bit sweet, but a bitter after taste. Drinking this beer is also contributing to saving the shores of Louisiana, I am a now an environmental drinker. (Houston 201205)

An ok pilsner with grassy hops and hay, but like G said, lacking the pleasant crispness and a little sweet leaning. For $4.50, it's about twice the price per ounce i'd want to pay for something like this, and wouldn't again.

An enjoyable, but somewhat sweet pilsner. It seems to lack that sharp pilsner bite that's a calling card of a quality pils. Kinda wheaty in flavor with fruity angle, hops are a bit earthy. Easy drinking and enjoyable. -

About what I expected from Abita and a pilsner in general. Pours a pale golden color with a moderate white head. Nice bitter bite up front and finishes a bit on the sweeter side. Light to medium bodied. Despite being on the gulf during the entire Deepwater Horizon incident as part of my state's response and making a trip to NOLA shortly after we stood down, I had yet to see one of these. But yesterday I was at a USCG exchange and they had two, so I picked 'em up. The beer's decent, $0.75 off every bottle goes to gulf assistance and it'll be a commemorative bottle for my time this past summer. Now, as many of you know and I have mentioned before, we can't get bombers here in Alabama... maybe this was because it was on a federal US Government installation? But, this was the only bombers they had - and first I've seen on any USG installations in the state... good thing is whisky's cheap at the exchanges.

I wanted to try this mainly because of "the cause" and all, especially because I live in Florida. The price seemed a little steep, but was $1 off on sale so figured I'd give it a try for $4. Not really anything special...probably better off donating a buck or two directly to the fund....but good to try something new and worth about what I paid after the seventy-five cent donation. The flavor is almost a 7, but I can taste the carbonation both in flavor and when I burp. An all around average beer, but there are much better pilz out there.

A generous gift from my friend Jennifer. Pours a Bright hazey golden colour, nice mellow head, finger sized. Aroma is soft, not overly fruity, but pleasently floral and lively. Taste is intially grapefruity, but tapers off into a sweet mellow finish.

I'm a sucker for good causes and cleaning up the Gulf Shore is as good as any as I can think of right now. The beer itself isn't spectacular by any means. It pours a clear golden yellow, with a huge genrous white head. Barley and hops is the aroma, and the flavour. Again, nothing spectacular, but it's folr a good cause.

Sampled on 10/23/2010. This Pilsner pours a medium orange gold color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head, with decent lacing. Aroma is cereal and grain, fruity and sweet. A medium bodied pilsner. The malts are cereal and grainy, slightly fruity and a touch of sweetness. The hops are herbal and spicy. Some citrus and lemon aspects. Decent carbonation. A little sweet and that pilsner sharpness is somewhat muted. Decent pilsner. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and sweet. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

A hazy, pale golden colored beer. Lots of bubbles in the body. A moderate creamy textured off white head rises above. Some hang time, and, a decent lacing of light film on the sides of my new Dogfish Head glass with light cap and ringlet atop the body. A pilsener, alright. Sweet malt and light citrus in the nose and taste. Medium to medium heavy body. Creamy as it goes down.
