Saisons have been around for ages. Traditionally brewed by Belgian and French farmers to provide refreshment during harvest. I'm guessing that flavour wasn't a main concern back then; the priority was to provide a beverage that was safe to drink, because water usually wasn't. Never the less, over time they developed a beverage chrarissed by beer geeks of the modern world. The alcohol content was low, so the workers could consume enough to keep hydrated and still perform their job: To load the barn with enough barley for next years brewing season. I bet these hardworking, humble farmers never imagined, that centuries later, their style of brewing would inspire brewers from all over the world. As all our beers, this is a very modern, you might say new world, interpretation of this style. Based on the tradition we have used a French Saison yeast, which provides a plethora of funky, earthy, very "Belgian" flavours. From there we have upped the ante a fair bit by doubling the amount of malt, and thereby the alcohol, and loaded the kettle with punchy Nelson Sauvin hops. Unlike the original, this is not a beer meant to be drunk by the gallon. Moderation is the key for full enjoyment of all great beers.

Wish lister and Another winner from 8 Wired, though a very expensive one. This frothy hazy golden brew is well balanced between bright citrusy spicy hops and some light (lighter than expected) barnyard funk and a champagne like feel. I prefer the Big Smoke just a touch for a few bucks less, but this is damn good too. High 4.1-4.2, Smoke was a 4.2+.

One thing is certain, the graphic designer at 8 Wired is pushed all that hard to come up with new designs. This is the hoppiest saison I can recall. A golden pour with a bit of cloudiness and a large white head. The tropical fruitiness of the Nelson Sauvin hops bites through notes of pine and apples. The flavour is a little more rounded with the fruitiness balancing out the yeastiness.

Wow! This is one heck of a brewery! Hazy golden colour, beautiful and hoppy, some yeast on the nose, but its fairly subdued. Get some honeysuckle, flowers, some light floral pine, slightly tart, some sweet apple and champagne like aromas. Paired this with a lamb hot dog and it was a great combination. Medium bodied, this beer has a slight wheat/oat almost undertone that rounds out the beer and makes it a full mouth experience. Really really great.

Pours a hazy golden-orange color with a small frothy white head which fades down very slowly leaving behind some nice lacing. The aroma is a mix of sweet grainy and bready malts with grapefruit, pineapple, and tropical hops with some Belgian yeast, spices, wheat, and lemon zest. The taste starts off with some wheat and grainy malts with some lemon zest, grapefruit and tropical hops, and a touch of bitterness. Through the middle, some more lightly bready malts come through with some Belgian yeast, spices, and some spicy and floral hops with a bit more bitterness. The finish is a mix of sweet grainy malts, wheat, grapefruit and spicy hops, Belgian yeast, and lemon zest. The mouth feel is medium bodied with moderate heavy carbonation and feels smooth with a dry and citrusy finish.

I recommend caution, and a big thirsty towel, when opening this - the bottle I sampled fizzed like New Year's champagne. Strong aroma is fruity, mainly apple with a little pear and a hint of orange, and quite yeasty. It pours a pretty clear golden amber with a very thick cream-white head. Crisp, fruity, sour flavor has notes of apple, grapefruit, malt and pear and a pinch of yeast. Smooth texture has not much fizz but good body.

Bottle from Belmont Party Supply in Dayton, OH. Slightly hazy golden orange pour with a tall white head leaving some beautiful lacing. Very hoppy Saison - floral and fruity, slight pine - a really fabulous nose, sweet honeysuckle, yeasts, tart and funk. Taste is hop forward but not overly bitter, just hoppy, with a tasty floral-fruity-slightly pine presence, honeysuckle, yeasties and more tart funk. Really a great beer. Kudos to 8 Wired for this one; the Nelson Sauvin hops are a fantastic addition.

500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7%. Deep golden colour, large white head. Lovely aroma of Nelson Sauvin hops, with notes of gooseberries, white grapes and tropical fruits, also a hint of pine. The flavour is medium sweet and very fruity, Nelson Sauvin elements dominate, but the beer is not too bitter. The Belgian / French saison yeast is more subdued. A fine and very drinkable beer!
