History: Huguenots may have originated the style as they traveled through France to Flanders, having first mentioned it in the 1600s. During their time, there were said to be seven hundred weissbier breweries in Berlin. Later, in 1809, Napoleon and his troops identified Berliner Weisse as the Champagne of the North. He requested the beer be served w/syrup to cut its extreme level of acidity. About "1809":<br> “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "18099" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F). Produced by Dr. Fritz Briem, Weihenstephan & Doemens.

The pour is gold, very hazy, and topped with a loose white head. Lacing is minimal. Aroma is tart fruits, light wheat, yeast, and funk. Weak mouthfeel, but not watery. Taste is puckeringly sour to start, but the finish has a little sweetness from the wheat.

Pours hazy, hubby solar yellow with a thick but effervescent snow-white head. Aroma presents nice fruity and yeasty tones. Flavor has a malty core that supports yeasty and somewhat sour fruit notes. Mouthfeel is on the thin side and has little fizz. Nevertheless, give it a try.

bottle is the same as the pic, as is the name, but it says 5% lite funk fruit and wheat on the nose. not the best looking beer - yellow as expected with a bubbly white head that disappears quick, then it looks flat, though it's not, with some floaties. light prickly feel fits the style. flavor of light lemon, a little sour and a little cereal sweetness. not bad, but not up to par with Hottenroth.

The pucker is relatively weak, and there’s only a hint of barnyard tang. It’s a bit yogurty, but that’s a poor descriptor. All in all, it’s actually further from the norms of beer than most sours despite being less "sour." It’s not hard to drink at all. It’s fairly vinous but less so than a Flanders Red or something. There are strong notes of fruity, spicy wheat, no surprise with its high wheat content and coming from one of, if not the, best wheat beer breweries. My opinion of the beer is higher than my average score. It is not a nice looking beer. The head fizzes up and rapidly dissipates leaving no lacing and a cloudy overripe banana yellow glass. The smell is yogurt sourness mixed with spiced wheat with a metallic note. The flavor is very good. It’s refreshing and bizarre, at once. You can taste the lactic acid, but it’s very clean and not off-putting.

Nicely tart and exceptionally quenching, I hope this style continues to be revitalized, and become more readily available. Golden yellow color, soapy head and streaky lacing with tight carbonation. Applesauce and lime aromas followed by saltine crackers and sugar cookies. Zesty, lightly sour and easy to throw back. Green apple, light peach and lemon peel fruit flavors with dry wheat and grass. Good profile, very calming and approachable.

Love the label - rather historic. Pours a murky yellow with an initially large head that quickly vanishes leaving a good white ring. Great carbonation. Big lemon and yeast with a slight sweet wet malt and floral hops. taste is tart, sour, tart, with lemon and citrus yeastiness and then sweet with the malts ending dry from a bit of floral and earthy hop. Big Yeah on this one - very refreshing - like lemonade on a hot summer day.

I bought this one just to try the style, have to say it was pretty interesting. Described above by Napoleon as "champange of the north" is a pretty accurate description. It pours a very murky, super carbonated body with a massive head. Aromas of apple, pear, banana, clove and yeast. Mouthfeel was light but crisp and refreshing like champange. Flavor was sour apple, with a fruity clean aftertaste. I wish i had another but oh well. A fine brew and style i would like to find again.

Pucker up. ‘Cause this is a sour experience. And that’s why the retailer I brought this rare treasure from suggested I serve it with a raspberry flavored simple syrup. To get a sense of the beer I pour a portion and was impressed by the cloudy yellow bidy and the huge frothy white head. It dissipated quickly. A complexity of fruits and tartness strike the nose and with the added effect of heavy carbonation attack the palate. The beer has the texture of a champagne. The simple syrup was a good idea. A teaspoon or two is all that is needed to take the edge off the tartness. This is an excellent beer to pair with a dessert such as a classic New York cheese cake.

Pours an extremely pale lemon-yellow with a transient effervescent white head. Some sediment flakes quickly settle out. Mild aroma of sour lemon. Quite a rush with first taste; full, clean, spritzy mouthfeel. Fresh lemongrass flavor turn very tart, then balance out for a long, tantalyzing, faintly spicy lactic finish. Nicely crafted; quite possibly the best Berliner I've had. MUSIC: 'Berlin Tonight' by Bruce Cockburn; " shapechanging over glass on the front line of the last gasp"; 'Napoleon' by Ani DiFranco; "and i know you would always want more, i know you would never be done, 'cuz everyone is a f***ing napoleon; 'Champagne Sparkle' by Dan Baird & Homemade Sin; "champagne sparkle and no regrets"
