201 Black Isle Export Oatmeal Stout United Kingdom Imperial Stout 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Chocolate and licorice notes as well as grape juice in the nose. A vigorous pour produces a decent frothy camel-colred head with good retention and decent lace. Body is opaque very dark brown with a hint of ruby. Mouth is medium and a bit chewy and quite fizzy, maybe too fizzy. Licorice is the predominant flavor for sure with some bitter chocolate and burnt grain at the ending. This rounds out a bit after a few swigs, that initial Licorice hit is a bit shocking, but now I am starting to enjoy the brew. There is some black cherry flavor hidden in there, starts sweet and goes bitter in the middle with a surprisingly clean aftertaste. 2nd Black Aisle I have had and both are high quality beer making.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Strong grassy nose with some bread and a bit of funk, spot on. Good fluffy white head with decent lace atop a clear golden body. Mouth is medium, carbonation well done. Darn good American-made Pils. Grassy sour notes, light malt body, crisp and dry, very very well done.

203 Long Trail Brewing SMaSH Project Single #2 United States American Pale Ale 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Well first off Long Trail does not categorize this brew. I went with APA but it could just as easily be an IPA. Mosaic prominent in the nose tropical fruit and to me, more flower than piney. Also some sweet honey there. Big frothy white head with nice lace and limited retention sits atop a hazy pale apricot body. Mouth is a bit thin, nicely carbonated, slick and tingly. Flavor is peppery, bitter pineapple with some earthy dryness. Finish is very clean, the bitter is pronounced, the alcohol masked with just a hint of warming afterwards. For the single malt/single hop experiment this is nicely balanced. In retrospect I should maybe have called this an IPA, the moderate 52 IBU is really quite bitter in this brew., its like an English Bitter with some fruit.

204 Pioneer Beer American India Pal United States IPA 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Wonderful IPA nose, very floral and some pine, pepper and vanilla. Hazy (unfiltered?) pale orange/gold body topped with frothy white head with good retention and good lace. Mouth is medium bodied, oily/slippery and just a bit creamy. Really classic IPA flavor profile, very solid malt backbone is just a touch sweet and showcases some serious hop notes. Floral, tropical, and piney, its all there. Finish features just a hint of alcohol warming and is dry and clean. This little known beer company (which apparently rents time from the also little known Shebeen Brewing Co) has knocked one out of the park. One of the top 5 IPA's I have had.

205 Jack's Abby Coffee Smoke & Dagger United States Rauchbier 3.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Unpleasant nose reminds me of tennis balls, a nose I associate with a very stuck and failed home-brew brown ale attempt long ago. Dark brown body, hint of ruby topped with decent head and decent lace that is caramel colored. Mouth is thickish and too fizzy. Some smoke in the taste and bit on the sweet side, cotton candy, not into smoked beers but this one is actually pretty drinkable. Finish is sweetish and fairly clean, the watery feeling remains.

206 Samuel Adams Nitro IPA United States IPA 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 8

Pine and biscuit and lavender in the nose. Clear golden body topped with worthy egg white head with good retention and OK lace. Mouth is thick and creamy (nitro). 100 IBU tastes like 75 or so (nitro again) but it is quite bitter. A hint of peach in the flavor, a dry raw grainy flavor with a bit of alcohol present. I tend to find a bit of sour in nitro spa's and its in this one too. Finish is astringent and sour in an unpleasant way.

207 Jack's Abby Calyptra Session IPL United States Pale Lager 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 7

Tropical and citrusy hop notes and honey in the nose. Slight haze to the golden body of this unfiltered brew with decent white head, a bit of lace, and a lasting skim coat. Mouth is a bit on the thin side. Carbonation is good. Flavor is all hops, sweetish and citrusy with a hint of ripe tropical fruit. Lacking in the malt presence. I wish somebody could figure out how to make a session IPL or IPA with a strong malt back bone. Finish is a touch medicinal. Extra point on the overall for local sourcing.

208 Jack's Abby House Lager United States Lager 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Grass and a bit of funk/skunk in the nose, with a bit of floral hops and some honey. Medium gold body topped with moderate haead, skim coat retention, no lace to speak of. Mouth is medium to light with decent carbonation level.Tastes like a very pleasant Bud. Sweet malts just present with an ever so slight sour finish, clean on the pallet afterwards. Pretty well balanced but a touch on the sweet side. A simply brew, indeed a house lager. Very quaffable on a hot summer's day.

209 Troegs Troegenator Doublebock United States Doppelbock 2.5

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

No nose, yes no nose! Vigorous pour produces very little head with near zero retention. True deep ruby body, off-white skim coat.Mouth is medium to light, a bit under-carbonated. Flavor is NOT bold, subtle ripe fruit, roasted grains, toffee, coffee, maybe some banana. Sweet cotton candy finish. I wonder if this is a bad bottle, the carbonation is just soooo off. The flavor profile is OK to good, the alcohol ois properly masked for the style.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Boom, this packs a punch! Nose of malt and vanilla. Dark ruby body is topped by caramel colored minimum head with moderate lace.Mouth is medium bodied, almost chewy, and quite fizzy in a good way.Rye is very present in the mouth with some sweet roasted malts and a bitter finish. The alcohol is VERY warming. The finish is a bit thin and pretty clean. Good night Irene.

211 Goose Island Green Line Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Some malt and floral hops in the nose. Thin head with good lace over a still light copper body. Mouth is medium and perhaps a bit undercarbonated. This is a true pale, a bit on the English side for an American, which I like. Like a Gary's with a bit more flower. A bit buttery a bit funky, spot on.

212 Black Isle Organic Export Scotch Ale United Kingdom Scottish Ale 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Added this beer as it does not appear to be the same as the Black Isle Scotch Ale, the abv on that is 4.5, this export is 7.9 Aroma of toasted carmelly malts, cotton candy, and some vinous notes. Deep brown body with ruby hints that is not quite opaque topped with a moderate head that is off white and leaves a long lasting skim coat with little lace. The mouth if fairly full, slick and tingly, carbonation nicely done, really fills the palate. This is a sweet beer with a clean finish, quite well done. Leaves hints of coffee at the end with some tobacco. Up front its ripe dark fruit and toffee. The hops are minimal and indistinct but they balance the flavor nicely. Not normally my cup of tea but this is a very nice beer. Alcohol a bit present as a warming in the finish. Suspect this profile will round out and be a bit more complex as it warms. Well done!

213 Bell's Smitten Golden Rye Ale United States Rye Beer 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Mild nose of rye malt and some grassy notes. Pours a thin head with moderate retention and some lace. Light copper body. Nice slick medium mouth on this with carbonation spot on. Superbly balanced which probably leads to a lot of downgrading here. Bells is a master balancing complex flavors. Malt and rye dominate the taste with a floral hops balance and a very dry finish but lingers and is slightly bitter. Extremely sessionable.

214 New Belgium Citradelic United States IPA 3.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Orange in the nose and some cotton candy. Not much head but OK lace atop a medium yellow body. Mouth is thin but good tingle. Flavor is a bit bland tangerine present, no malt body to speak of. Alcohol masked, slight artificial in the end taste, slightly bitter. Drinkable.

215 Smuttynose Bouncy House IPA United States IPA 2.7

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

A little tropical fruit in the mild nose. Almost no head and no lace over a medium copper body, undercarbonated. Mouth is flat and medium bodied. This followed a funky buddah so I drank it in the wrong order. Small flavor but for a sea session IPA I will kick it up bit. (actually I think beerpal.com needs to start a moderate ABC category for IPA's, this would win.) Mostly just bitter with some citrus and tobacco. Acceptable but not the Finest kind.

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Almost no nose. Little head. Nice lace. Medium gold body. Medium body a bit undercarbonated. A bit heavy on hops or lite on the malt bill. Some sour in the finish not much grass or anything of interest. Airport price but a smoking bar.

217 Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Tropical IPA United States IPA 3.6

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Nose of Sweet Tarts without the artificial aspects. Clear medium amber body with continuing effervescence topped with a moderate white head that laces well and has a long-lasting generous skim coat. The mouth is medium and plays to the entire palette with a very clean finish. I am quite fond of the flavor profile. Relative bitterness is greater than the 55 IBU would indicate. Malt bill rounds this one out nicely with hints of caramel and softly toasted flavors but the up front tropical notes for Citra and Mosaic hops really shine, with some complexity added from El Dorado. Alcohol well masked at 6.7 but present in the finish and slightly warming Finish is clean with little aftertaste, just a sense of bitterness. I hope they move this up from Beer Camp to a regular offering, its delightful. Rerate: They did indeed move it out of beer camp, unfortunately something was lost in translation. Nose isa bit more malty, flavor profile the hops are diminished, fairly bland and an unpleasant finish, aspirin comes to mind.

218 Lagunitas Imperial Pils United States Imperial Pilsener 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 7

Nose of a lemon cookie, some pine. Bright gold crystal clear body topped with a frothy white-on-white head with decent retention and little lace. Mouth is medium bodied, perhaps a hair under-carbonated but pretty nice. Flavor is a bit of an odd duck. There is a sour ending that hints at a Pils but its preceded with some fairly tropical hop notes. That sour end has a bit of a medicinal quality. There is a pepper bite in the midtaste. All in all a bit too much of an ale flavor profile, the alcohol is warming.

219 Grey Sail Brewing Pour Judgement IPA United States IPA 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Mild but lasting nose of mountain wild flowers, clover honey, and a hint of ripe tropical fruit. Pours a surprisingly cloudy pale peach body with a very good white head that lasts and laces very well, and leaves some debris on the bottom of the glass....is this unfiltered??? I don't think so but don't know which makes it very tuff to grade. Mouth is VERY creamy for an IPA, close to full bodied yet finishes a bit thin, interesting and a nice change of pace. Flavor is subtle. Some hints of honey, the hops are fairly neutral and bittering. The Eureka! hop is interesting, slightly peachy and leads to a very very dry finish. Wonder what the "German"malt bill is here, almost seems like a pils malt. All in all a unique IPA that remains true to the style.

220 Ommegang Game of Thrones 002: Take the Black Stout United States Stout 3.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Remarkably little nose, maybe some dark cherry. Nice black opaque body topped with toffee colored head that is sizable and short lived with good lace. Mouth is a bit thin but Ok for style. Flavor is fairly subtle, some dark fruit, some sweetness, and a slightly bitter at the finish, pretty well done.

221 AleSmith Speedway Stout United States Imperial Stout 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Black cheery, coffee, and cotton candy in the nose. Dead black body with a caramel colored head that is long lasting and with minimal lace. Nice round mouth that is medium bodied. Very complex flavor but overall sweet. Toffee and coffee in the initial flavor, goes quite sweet in mid-taste, then goes to ripe dark fruit, alcohol present and warming at the end with hops finally kicking in for a bit of tartness in the finish, final ending sour and fruity.

222 Orono Brewing Ozone IPA United States IPA 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Really big nose of pineapple and orange followed by some violets. Pours a light copper body with serious head and lacing. Mouth is very tingly, medium bodied, a touch creamy. This one is all about the hops, especially flavoring hops, its bitter but well balanced with a light malt backbone. Its a treat to drink a really fresh beer and the dry hopping really comes through. Slightly sweeter than it smells with a perfectly dry finish and alcohol well masked. I hint of nuttiness. Orono brewing company is a very small brewpub making some fantastic beers.

223 Spencer Trappist Ale United States Belgian Ale 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Vanilla, grass, biscuit, a bit of piney hops, a fresh yeast in the nose. Good god, the head on this thing! Makes Duvel look flat!! Head is off white/light beige and rocky and frothy even with a soft pour. Leaves great lace before I even take the first sip.Deep honey colored body is cloudy as all get out. Yeast chunks are floating all around and also collecting on the bottom of this unfiltered brew. Mouth is soft and fizzy, medium bodied and slightly slick. Flavor profile is similar to a good Saison. Good grassy flavors with some barnyard funk, as it sits a bit I am getting apple and some green herbal notes. Has a nice sour hit to it with a finish closes with bubble gum and aftertaste is remarkably clean. Haven't had many American Belgians but man this is one balanced, subtle, tasty brew!

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

If you can find this then by all means drink it! Big hop nose of pine and citrus with a hint of vanilla and bread. Fantastic thick foamy white head that lasts and lasts and great lace. Body is clear light copper. Medium bodied and coats the entire mouth, slightly slick and carbonation spot on. OK flavor....I love it! The fresh hopping is FRESH! I guess it squeaks into "Pale" territory because the hops are in the nose and in the flavor but the bittering level is not high. This beer tastes green in the best of ways. Malt backbone is there but backed off from and English pale making it American and particularly west coast. Alcohol almost entirely masked. Finish is slightly bitter and very dry.The flavoring hops are intense and reminiscent of their daytime IPA but the 6.5 turns it into a great beer. Did I meantion I LOVE THIS BREW? SOME NOTES ON THE 2016 VERSION: abvis up to 7%, the nose is bigtime pineapple, the head is somewhat reduced, the body is hazy, the fresh wet taste is there and the finish is tart.
