I think the State should get the heck out of the marriage business and dissolve all surrounding laws and regulations, including tax structures around it.

Of course. Marriage became a legal arrangement many years ago. I would not have married my girlfriend if it were possible for her to use my health insurance. Continue to share my life with her until this day? Certainly. Married? Probably not. It is about f'n time we let gay and lesbian couples share that same legal arrangement. ...unless, of course, we just discard the whole thing altogether, as Eagle suggested.
