My students are very familiar with my fondness for "brain grease." My Through the Looking-glass mug is a mainstay in my hand as I lecture/move about campus. I didn't realize how firm that association was until this conversation in the hallway took place: Student: Mr. L! Are you okay? Me: Why, yes. I believe so. Student:Oh. You didn't have your mug, so I thought something was terribly wrong. I was like, that's not normal. I was going to go check the sky for the four horsemen. The coffee mug in question has this logo on it and was given to me by a student 5 or 6 years ago. No thanks. Not a single beer in the world even close to that kind of money. Heck, $100 for a single beer is silly. I sure hope it was a charity thing.

Seriously ridiculous. The best part is I'd bet at least a couple of those guys plunking down 2 Grand make a normal middle class salary like me.

I said today that $2000 is about $1970 more than I would ever spend on a single bottle of beer. HOD sold a case of Dave with all the money actually going to a dog charity which is cool but it wouldn't bother me if it went back to the brewery, either. Portland is one of the only cities I know that can actually get away with doing something like this. Lots of beer geeks with hidden agendas. 3/4 of those Daves are likely to leave the city by the weekend. It's a white whale, bro. Gotta tick that shit!

No Fucking Way. For that amount of greenbacks I could fly to Portland (again), drink copious amounts of beer with a cool BeerPal, eat well, and enjoy my fat sassy ass.

Here is a little blurb about the bottle sale yesterday. A couple of the guys I talked to who bought a Dave admitted they were proxies for a trader friend elsewhere. They'll get their $2k back plus some really awesome beer. I look at this as like another baby-step in beer's progression towards wine and some of the exclusion that takes place with certain producers. Yeah, you can have this special beverage but only for a eye-popping, wallet gouging $2k. If you want to donate $10k to a dog charity, why not make 1,000 bottles of something special and sell it for $10?

I gave Travis his bottle; he didn't have to pay one cent. He's using in his bread recipe.
