Brewery Discussion by BLUESANDBARBQ

Great Portland brewery, employs BeerPal's own Phishpond. Very good blog about The Commons. Rusitic Urban Brewing with The Commmons And all of their beers kick MAJOR ass.

Fret...I am jealous...anyone who saw bands like the Jefferson Airplane in their hey day, I envy.....The Starship played here on July 3rd as part of the 4th/regatta celebration, but I opted to go to the Pirate game.....[:D]
I saw Starship a few years ago at the Taste of Blue Ash (OH) Frankly, had I known they were playing, I would've picked a different day to go. At least, you had a Pirates game to amuse you... I'd rather watch a beer-league softball game than that has-been sappy pop band. (Speaking of Taste of Blue Ash, I've seen War there a couple of times, they're still a helluva good show!) Jefferson Starship, the band that rose from the ashes of the Jefferson Airplane after Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady left to pursue Hot Tuna full-time (whom I've seen quite a bit) was actually a pretty decent band. Jorma was replaced by Craig Chaquico on lead guitar, with a high-energy style, very unlike Jorma's. David Freiberg, ex-Quicksilver Messenger, and Pete Sears, formerly of Rod Stewart's Faces, split bass and keyboard duties. First couple of albums, Dragonfly and Red Octopus, were kick-ass. I loved 2/3 of the third album, Spitfire. I believe the 4th album was Freedom At Point Zero, had a lot going for it... the title track, last track on the album, contained the line, "the rock & roll isn't over." In retrospect, I'd say it was pretty much over at that point. "We Built This City" (Knee Deep in the Hoopla album) says to me, if you have to remind your audience, your city's infrastructure needs some work! Paul Kantner left in '84, taking the "Jefferson" with him, legally, and Starship (fronted by Mickey Thomas) turned into a sappy, white-bread pop band. You may not be aware of the 3 albums released in the period between the death of the Airplane and the birth of Jefferson Starship, by Kantner, Slick and Freiberg (name order varies on the 3) Sunfighter (yes, that's China Kantner on the cover) Manhole (released as a Grace Slick solo album) and Baron von Tollbooth & the Chrome Nun. I'd say much of these 3 albums rivals the best of anything the Airplane ever did. No shit, remember I'm talking about my favorite rock band here, I am serious! Oh, and btw, Jefferson Starship still exists, as Paul Kantner's band and were touring as recently a last fall. I couldn't get the timing to work out to see them; I hope I get another chance. After all, PK's 72, and none of us are likely to live forever!

Speaking of the heyday... Not really a concert, but I saw a LOT of Lonnie Mack in my teen years, especially hanging out at Lonnie Mack's Teen Club here in Covington, KY. Lonnie's a local guy, born in nearby SE Indiana, his musical career got started in Cincy. In the mid-sixties, he lived near Independence, KY, just south of Covington. The teen club was open for only a few years, but it was fun while it lasted; Lonnie played there pretty much every weekend. Heckuva nice guy, too. He dropped by a practice of the band I was in (the Delyrix, pretty hip name for 1966, eh?) one saturday afternoon and jammed with us for a couple of hours, even let our lead player hit a few licks on his "No.7" Flying V!

Paul Kantner, David Freiberg, etc, the band I've been trying to get to see for several years now. Damn ! Wish I would see any of the Jefferson Airplane variation of the band. Missing this for a sport that had over 100 games a year = bad move. For me memorable concerts are Pink Floyd in 1994 and Metallica always give a great show. The Ramones opening for White Zombie before they all started passing away was also a highlight in my life. Glad I have seen my favorite prog bands: Yes and King Crimson.
