Miles Davis John Coltrane Django Reinhardt, esp, w/the quintet of the Hot Club Return to Forever - I've seen each of the members as solo acts, but never the whole band. Ten Wheel Drive King Crimson - original line-up w/Greg Lake vocals. Crosby, Stills & Nash - made plans a bunch of times, but somehow never made it. I gotta stop thinking about this, the list just keeps growing...

And how could I have forgotten The Mothers? I've seen Zappa Plays Zappa. Good, but...! The really rare bird of my vinyl collection is the Mothers first album, Freak Out, in MONO!

I like and enjoy music, but am not as big of a music fan as say, sports. I'd give Lance Armstrong's left...well..to see Ruth or Gehrig play. Or Jim Brown. Joe Montana & Rice. LT (the real one that likes crack & teenagers). Or Magic Johnson. Or Tyson in his prime. Ali/Frazier/Foreman. Or Jesse Owens. Or Gretzky and Messier in Edmonton...

Good call. When it comes to past greats, I'd generally prefer sports over musicians. But in today's sports prima-donna age, I'd take an active artist over most athletes.

There are tons of musicians and athletes that I would love to have seen in person to decide for myself their greatness instead of relying on others hype. I don't have a preference of one over the other, because I know it's not going to happen no matter what. Larry Bird is not walking through that door...Kevin McHale is not walking through that door and if they do, they're old and gray...lol

There's not too many athletes left to "look up to" that's for sure. As a long time Yankees fan (Donnie Baseball wil lalways be my favorite player) I've been blessed with guys like Rivera and Jeter for the last 18 years. Enough (for me at least) to cancel out the idiocy of guys like A-fraud, Giambi, etc, etc... It was really cool (if too late and too brief) to have The Great One and Messier on the NY Rangers towrds the end too. Messier being my favorite hockey player ever, Gretzky the best, both playing on my favorite team! I dreamt of Barry Sanders unretiring and going to the Giants...little too late for that now [:)]

That's enough. I call thread-jack. No, not cuz beerpal is busy enough to every make that accusation, where one thread has to be preserved too purely... But, becuase you are jacking us all with that NY sports talk ;). Back to the regularly scheduled concert talk.... :) (Sanders was a gem. Gretzky darned respectable and amazing.)

I'm listening to Beethoven's Cello sonatas (#s 3 & 5) as performed by my most beloved cellist, Jacqueline Du Pre. I think she might make a really close second to LvB. To hear her rip through Elgar's cello concerto, or one of Beethoven's piano trios/cello concertos with Barenboim at the piano would be bewildering and awe-full (i.e., full of awe, not awful). ...sorry, I don't know a damn thing about sports...

First and foremost, above all else, without any doubts, the performance I would sell my soul and various body parts for, would be to see Ludwig van Beethoven performing one of his piano sonatas, or even leading an orchestra in one of his early piano concertos. As his hearing diminished, he had to stop performing in public and conducting, so it would have to be the earlier pieces...
