Meantime Chocolate

Beer Discussion by PAULCARDOM

BeerPal Notice: This topic was created for discussion of the beer Meantime Chocolate. Why is this considered a Schwarzbier? According to the Meantime website, this is a Porter with chocolate added A schwarzbier is NEVER a porter at any point during it's life cycle (and in England Meantime Chocolate is sold as a Porter). Unfortunately the Canadian label doesn't say anything one way or another (apparently the British label says 'porter'). From the website http://www.meantimebrewing.com/our-store/chocolate CHOCOLATE & PORTER STYLE ALE - 6.5% ABV RICH AND REWARDING The natural mocca flavours of the four different roasted malts used to brew this rich, dark beer are complemented by the addition of real chocolate during maturation. Warm, complex and smooth, it has a long, clean finish. A ideal dessert or digestif beer, it is also a superb match for beef or game stews.

I'm assuming that the best category is Baltic Porter because it is lagered. Therefore it fits under that umbrella although vaguely.
This. There are several Baltic Porter examples that are top fermented and later lagered. However, this is a good example of a beer that could arguably fit either category: porter or baltic porter. Neither is "wrong," and both are better than schwarzbier for sure.
The crew concluded that of baltic porter, porter, and imperial porter, it is probably best as a porter. It isn't a true baltic porter, despite being lagered, nor is it really trying to be that as a "chocolate" infused type beer. It isn't big enough to be an imperial porter, and as an oddball for any one of those style, it is probably best in the catch-all "porter" category. Hopefully this satisfies everyone. If it doesn't, we don't care. J/K. Bottom line: some beers don't fit perfectly a style, and we're not creating a chocolate beer category as of today, let alone a chocolate porter category.... And this is a much better status than yesterday, where it was a "schwarzbier" somehow.

A few years back I watched Adventures in Babysitting and much to my surprise...Albert Collins had a cameo in the movie. That was the only thing that made that movie watchable....and even then...just barely.
