Oh God ! Monk Brewers Run Out Of World's Best Beer
Industry News by CHOPZ
Brussels, Belgium (AHN) - The beer brewed by monks at a Belgian abbey is so good, it was voted the world's best. The problem? It soon sold out. http://www.allheadlinenews.com/cgi-bin/news/newsbrief.plx?id=2247567012&fa=1 http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200508/s1435915.htm

If I'm not mistaken, that's already old news. I spoke with a retailer in Ga. a couple months ago and was told at that time there would be no more than what was already on shelves. Sadly, he had none on his shelves. Seems just another daunting hurdle to be cleared in my goal of sampling the top 20 of the world, but dammmit! It will be done!!!
PK, I think we still have some up here in Chattanooga...sounds like a good reason to bring the wife up and have a beer with the Nooga crew!

Many myths about St. Sixtus, most just that. The brew can be had year round in the area. The Palace Hotel, and the Kitty Kat Cafe always have bottles in Poperinge. Why not give the abbey a call? The beer phone: 057 40 10 57 (Belgium) 0032 57 40 10 57 (from abroad) The message sounds like ducks having sex, however you will know what is for sale. At any rate, it is a fun trip, and there is a ton of brews to be had in the area, some much better then the brew in question.
Hey, Sassy! Why don't you buy a sixer of that good stuff and cellar it? That way, if and when I've got a weekend, me and Bluez will make it a POINT to make it up your way. It's only about 2.5 hrs, but work schedule is a bi**h. Heck, if nothing else, I'll freakin meet you half way and do a swap. Could be cheaper than shipping if gas pump robbery decreases.
Well you have to admire their sticking to their guns, meaning "being a monk comes first, and brewing is second"....Anyway, since they won't increase supply, maybe the price will go up just like the increased demand for gas???.....that would also not be good....Oh well....
Ducks having sex???.....Oh man...Do you live in a barn or something.....I am sorry, but that just had me on the floor laughing!!!!......[:D]

I live next to the barn, and have a wire tap to spy on the critters. I would not fear prices at St. Sixtus taking a great leap. In the area, they have much competition, and I you believe Jaws Jackson, the Abbey increased capcity some time ago to the current levels. Go there and see what is up, you will find amazingly good brews all over Flanders, St. Sixtus being but one.

There may be many myths around regarding St. Sixtus but the latest waves of rumors and news articles were verified in person at St. Sixtus by eaglefan this Thursday. Indeed, they run out of beer fast and you can't easily get this stuff even directly from the Abbey. We were told the next batches of all three beers wouldn't be available until sometime this next week. The drive through area (a big "U") was closed, but normally you drive right on through when they have beer and they load up your trunk with a case after you sign paperwork. According to one local we spoke with (they are so kind and willingly speak broken English with visitors), the paperwork serves to remind you not to resell the beer by oath, as well as ensure no one person is loading up too much (and by inference re-selling the beer). As many of you know, the Westvleteren beers come with no labels on them (just a logo cap). This ensures that it is illegal to resell these bottles in Belgium and all of the places (liquor stores and cafes) we were at could not sell any to us (only one had it). The Palace Hotel (great tip, Brad!) had some, but couldn't sell them (they apparently bring them out upon request for customers who ask and are spending enough other money there - we didn't ask, since we had just had one of each brews at the Cafe de Vrede). The Cafe de Vrede across the street (not sure how they are affiliated with or licensed by the Abbey) is also permitted to sell the bottles. However, both places open the bottles for you and serve it in a glass so that you can't take it with you. The de Vrede used to allow carry outs of six packs, then singles, and now nothing. The "chase" was indeed half the fun, though, and drinking all three across the street from the Abbey in the de Vrede was still darned rewarding. I'll post some pictures, once my friend gets me a copy of the digital pics we took. Oh, and Brad is indeed correct, that there are plenty of other great beers in the area. It's well worth a trip if you are ever within striking distance. I should have carried home many more bottles of other stuff, because beers like Roche 10 were being sold for $1.35 Euros per bottle (1.70ish USD).
