Holy smokes, it's raining IDOLS on BeerPal! We've got some new BeerIdols to recognize. Near as Old Foam can remember, we last celebrated our 5th Idol, Chopz, on 11 Apr*. Now, in the blink of a virtual eyeball, we're up to 12 already-fer-cryin-out-loud! Awesome! This is really a significant milestone, and the hard work and dedication of these 7 new Idols should be announced with fireworks and fanfare. If you haven't already, please send a shout out to: Jon Moore, [:D] Bov, [:D] BeerGuy 101 [:D] Eagle Fan (we won't hold that against him) 538 [:D] Wriko, big #10 [:D] Brew Crew Brett, our 11th Idol [:D] and John C, our 12th and newest BeerPal Idol [:D] And who will be Lucky #13: JaIce, or EyeDrinkAle? http://www.beerpal.com/members/topcaps.asp *(with apologies to Brett, who posted a congratulations on 21 Jun, and to Wriko, the subject of that message. No offense intended, mates).

For those of us climbing (albeit slowly in my case) ever upward towards the pinnacle of Beerdom, keep this in mind: it's more about having fun and getting better than who gets there first. The top 10 beer cap winners on this site, fine gurus all, have reviewed an amazing 9000 beers between them. That is astounding, and the achievement is rightly praised. However, average membership length among the top ten is over 790 days each. So if you can review just 8 beers a week over a couple years, then you'll likely make it to guru, too! Take heart and keep plugging away. Awesome, yes, but reachable by all who want to put in the time and effort. But, bottom line, if you continually have fun and steadily improve your skills as a rater and advocate of quality, craft-brewed beer, then who cares about the caps? Raise the bar, lower the bar, change the name, it's all the same. Are we having fun? Are we getting better? Then we'll all be gurus, and what's wrong with that?

I agree w/ Foam. I also think the criteria should not be caps alone. I don't feel like an idol and have mucho to learn. A cap level plus minimum beer ratings or something of the like would be wise. I need at least 1000 beers to be an "idol" type.... 500 would make me feel somewhat like a guru. Now when it comes to site contributions.... beer caps have a little more relevance and do indicate some level of contribution (unless you're Flash and get no caps for 99% of your time). But, that's not necessarily the same as beernessness of someone. I've said it before.... It's all about learning and expanding.... and having fun. That's why I like beerpal.
