Anyone "convert" close friends/family?
General Beer Discussion by DOULOS31
It's been my mission for some time now, since we see my parents a lot, to convert my dad to fine beer drinking. When I first started drinking craft beers, a little less than a year ago, his fridge was well stocked with Coors and Coors Light (he had always been a Miller guy when I was growing up). He would always make fun of me, as he does with EVERYTHING I'm into that he finds silly (beer, fantasy football, computer games, etc)...calling my beer "Yuppy Beer". He insisted it was no better than his beer, but only overpriced and "trendy". Well, I managed to get him from Coors products to Yuengling some time last fall...but he insisted on buying them in cans, cuz they are cheaper. I know there is debate in some craft beer lands about the taste of beer in cans vs. bottles. I firmly believe that packaged in a regular can (like Yuengling does) instead of some nice coated can, the bottle taste is far superior. So, eventually, I bought him some in bottles and he agreed. Just recently, I got him drinking Newcastle, which he liked, but wouldn't buy. Then, I took him to the recent beer festival in Delaware (under the guise of father/son quality time :), and he actually found beers he liked there. Now, I go to his house this weekend and he bought Dogfish Indian Brown Ale (which I mentioned to him this week that I really liked), Ommegang Hennepin and Dead Guy Ale (the latter two he tried at the festival). I'd say that's a pretty good time to declare "Mission Accomplished." [8D] He's still VERY resistant to buying different beers, but man, he's come a long way. Heartbreakingly, though, I can NOT get his beer mug out of the freezer. He insists on pouring Hennepin and DGA into freezing cold glasses. [:(] Oh well. Long way come, long way to go, I guess.

dont think i've officially converted anyone but i can say i have certainly influenced others on their thoughts about beer. They know i drink good beer and i think it rubs off on them. I'm happy to say that........... It comes down to $$$ for a lot of people i guess and how much you value your beer.
I can claim at least a couple of converts. Ye olde Yuengling was responsible for one, going from PBR (YES PBFREAKIN'R) to Yuengling Lager first, then black and tan. Next thing you know, he's trying some of my homemade, then, voila...he's homebrewing. Similar story with another friend, but one of his first was homemade. Now, we all regularly make trips to our beer-blessed neighbors to the east (Ga.) and stock up semi-regularly.
If you have read some of my articles, you will notice that I refer to a friend named Bill. Bill drinks Budweiser, Old Mil (buttwiper and old swill), Because they are cheap and well that's what he's used to. On occasion Bill has tried Boddingtons, and approved, Yeungling, and approved, and I believe an Anchor Steam, but I am not sure. It's a slow process getting Bill to convert, but when he is short on the Dough Rae Mi, you know what he will be drinking! Oiz

Yuengling (and then Sam Adams Lager)... the first American beer that converted me from NO BEER to beer (I skipped the swill phase entirely.)

It isn't his everyday beer, but his favorite treat. It was about $11 a four pack, then went back up...[:(!]

Mmm...Celebrator. Damn, if that stuff weren't $14.00 a six pack at the local liquor store, I'd drink it a helluva lot more often.
Last night was kind of a big moment personally in regards to this subject. About a year ago I started a guys' night out with a bunch of my friends, and the purpose was to one a month, go to a local brewpub for dinner and have good microbrews. Well, last night we were at a party where the guy had a keg of Miller Lite. After my brother-in-law and I poured our first beers, he took a sip, looked at me, and said, "You know, ever since you started 'Beer Night Out', everytime I have a Miller Lite or something similar, it's really disappointing. Thanks for making me a beer snob!" I thought that was pretty funny, and in response to the subject, I guess I have converted my brother-in-law at least.
