Our first American Wild Ale, over 1 year in the making, aged in Oak barrels with red raspberry puree and Brettanomyces yeast. Riserva is the culmination of a beer journey that began over 2-1/2 years ago when we began experimenting with Brett.<p> You've got to taste this beer to see where the pinnacle of brewer's artisanship can take you. It's just unbelievably great! Starting with an incredible nose of tart berries, this full-bodied brew has a fruit-lambic palate, a pleasingly dry finish, and an intriguing complexity that'll leave you thinking of interesting descriptors for the rest of the session. As brewer's we've been waiting a long time to share this beer with you, but its definitely been worth the wait. I'm sure you'll agree once you taste it, if you're lucky enough! Extremely limited quantities on the first batch released in mid-June 2008 at a special event debut night at the brewery on June 13th from 5 to 8 pm, where it will be available for purchase as well. 11.4% Abv. Pours out a cloudy copper color with a head that disappears quickly. The aroma is of raspberries. The mouthfeel is medium in thickness. The taste is very tart and reminds me of Blushing Monk. One more good beer by Weyerbacher.

this murky ruby brown brew doesn't seem hot in any way, but it's a little heavy and sticky for a wild ale, making me wonder is 11.4% really necessary. Heavy on the oak, with sour fruits and ample raspberry, though not overtly so. A good but not great sour (has just a touch a that baby diaper thing going on too). Lingering on the palate. Thanks Greg for the trade.

Cork and caged bottle poured into a tulip presents amber red with strong carbonation and a wispy off white head. Aroma is funky and earthy. Mouthfeel is strongly carbonated but this drinks easy for 11%. Taste is wonderfully tart, it hits right under the tongue, but is balanced superbly with a sweet finish. A winner from weyerbacher.

straight "A" student .. . Pours out a dark orange amber, light to medium foam, dies down to a respectable headring, light spots pf lacing .. . ya, the comfort room is down the hall .. . touches of wood, raspberry, light balsamic vinegar, and a bit of leather .. . a tasty beverage but it still doesn't stand out.. . . Woo hoo hoo hoo! You owe me fifty bucks!

Nov. 2009 - Tasty. The pour was a light brownish purple with moderate head and no lacing. The aroma was awesome...sweet raspberries. The flavor was a nice blend of raspberry sweetness with some lambic like horseblanket funk. Solid.

Bottle: Poured a dirty and cloudy reddish color ale with a small bubbly head with minimal retention and not much lacing. Aroma of gross funky notes and lightly sweet and somewhat tart raspberry is pleasant but gets gross with the weird funky notes. Taste is also a strange mix between some nice tart raspberry notes with just enough sweetness too offset the acidity but the weird barnyard notes are not that pleasant. Body is quite full with limited filtration and medium carbonation with no apparent alcohol. I very much anticipated tasting this one but must admit being disappointed after all.

Bottle from SL, pulled this "red" brew to accompany the Phils game 2 NLCS game vs. the Dodgers. Pour was reddish-amber in color, off white to pink colored head, looked a little like Lindeman's Frambroise. The aroma was raspberry and fresh cedar-oak sawdust. The flavor followed, slightly sour raspberries, which turned a bit sweeter with warmer temperatures (to the point of resembling a Lindeman's Frambroise), either way firm raspberries all the way around, touches of vanilla, but firm highlights of oak sawdust throughout, balancing out a pretty nice brew. More bret would have been welcomed in this one (along with some leather), but it was enjoyable anyway (just a tad sweet). Soft fairly full mouthfeel. (After writing the review and getting ready to paste: WOW, 11% brew? Certainly no idea, quite well done w.r.t. alcohol heat!!!)

A vigorous pours creates an oxidized-pink, dirty tan colored head that starts out two-fingers in height. The beer is a dark amber, slight plum color that shows a murky, hazed red color when held up to the light. The most noticeable aroma is that of raspberry flesh that has been lightly oxidized (not quite as bright as the fresh fruit pulp). Underneath the expressive fruit are some sour aromatics that even seem to have a touch of acetic acid to it as well, though this is very soft and maybe wholly imagined. A touch of barnyard funk just barely struggles through to be noticed. Really though this is so dominated by the raspberry flavors that it washes out anything else interesting that might be happening in the nose; for this reason the nose is a bit of a let down.
Tart tasting with a sour raspberry flavor that has a touch of pulpy sweetness to it. This finishes with a sharpness that doesn’t quite cut through the raspberry, but seems to be fairly phenolic and spicy. Pepper notes in the finish are joined by some dusty malt notes as well as some curing plastic phenolics and some lightly tongue numbing turpene-like notes. Pretty well carbonated with a nice fizzy texture that helps to offset the fuller mouthfeel of this beer; this beer remains pretty drinkable for its strength, though it is still more of a sipping beer. As the beer warms it becomes more sweet, more so than the raspberry-derived tartness, but this only serves to accentuate other aspects of the raspberry character. Perhaps a touch more funky phenolics come out in the finish at this warmer temperature, but it really doesn’t pick up the complexity much.
Interestingly enough for a beer this strong, the raspberry character makes this quite a simplistic brew. Hints of a funky beer complexity lurk underneath the surface but don’t quite make it out enough to make this really interesting much less balanced. Enjoyable if you like raspberries as the malt and most of the funky notes that I was hoping to find are just overwhelmed. Not bad tasting, just a bit of a let down.
