Our latest creation, MUSE, is a Farmhouse Ale with a distinctive Weyerbacher signature, and its on its way out to stores this week and next. Farmhouse Ales, by tradition, were used as restoratives for workers during the warmer months under the hot midday sun. Typically made with barley, sometimes wheat and oats as well, a Farmhouse Ale could be light golden to amber in color, but always with a dry, slightly tart finish, thus being a great thirst quencher.

Weyerbacher MUSE is light amber in color, brewed with barley and a healthy dose of raw wheat and raw oats as per tradition, to give it a mouthfeel that’s both silky and light at the same time. The wheat and oats add a bit of cloudiness to the beer as well, so don’t be afraid, sometimes cloudy is good! A very special Belgian yeast strain was used to ferment this particular brew, and it was done at downright “hot” temperatures, 78 F, in order for the yeast to develop its spicy profile that is expected for a Farmhouse Ale. No spices were added to this brew, its all from the yeast.

MUSE is hopped with Styrian Goldings for bitter, and Saaz for aroma, both just adding even more to the dryness of the brew. Putting it all together, you have a slightly spicy palate, with pleasant aromas and very dry, mildly bitter finish. At 6.2%, you’ll want another one so you can ponder this intriguing taste profile, and you may find yourself wondering why you haven’t explored Farmhouse Ales before!

Bottle courtesy of Crizay: Poured a cloudy beige color ale with a nice pure white foamy head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of well balance Belgian malt, fruity ester and lightly spicy yeast was quite enjoyable. Taste is also a well balance mix between fruity ester with a nice touch of spicy yeast and light funky notes are also noticeable. Full body with great carbonation. Definitely not the most out-there Saison and maybe a bit too clean for the style but I have to admit that I actually quite enjoy this.

Came across a handful of these bombers discounted for $0.99, grabbed a couple for good measure. While this is not a Saison that really impressed me, I am pleased at the beer overall. Quirky aroma of spicy funk and old fruit. I didn't care for the aroma at first, but it gets more intriguing as time passes by. Wonderful bright and cloudy orange-amber pour. Large pillowing white head and a thick coat of fluffy lacing. Light on the palate with a real nice and easy smoothness. Melts away as it is constantly sipped. Finishes a touch syrupy with a bitter yeastiness. Biting flavor of fermented citrus and spicy yeast. A nice touch of lightly sour, funky malt. Noticeable wheat presence to compliment the barley. Unusual, even for this style and I like it. As odd as this beer seems, it all works out.

Orange pour with a yeast swirl like a tornado in the beer. Smallish head and some lacing also evident. Flavor was wheat with some light fruit, mild funk and loads of grass and peppery spices. Mouthfeel is thick and syrupy. Not bad, but not my favorite Weyerbacher offering.

Oh god this was a horrid creation of a beer. It smells like sweaty undies, band aids, mold, and condoms. There is some plastic nastiness in there. A murky yellowish orange color with a soapy head. Some citrus exists with some strange funk and more plastic flavor. This beer is just off from beginning to end. The only farmhouse aspect I gather is that the goat on the bottle took a dump in the beer.

Ho hum poured an light amber color with big bubbly head. Aroma was very wheaty some spices and less funk then it expected. Flavor had plenty of wheat some spices even some grass but that could just be funk. Okay jsut didn't do it for me.

Poured an orange-tinted amber color with a decent initial head, large bubbles/foam, not thick and fluffy, though, lacing ok. The aroma was cloves, wheat, a little farmhouse funk. Flavor was wheaty farmhouse funk, some undescript spices, strong pepper finish, slight grass underneath. Some degree of acidity and astringency in the aftertaste that detracted from where this beer was going. Mouthfeel light, acidic.

This is a very nice interpretation of a Belgian farmhouse ale. This Saison is golden and foggy with a solid head that melts to a 1/2 inch leave. On the schnoz, typical perfumey notes of citrus and spice can be detected. On the buds, bitter sweet yeasty alcoholic notes, again with the usual citrus and spice are there, with a very identifiable hop character. The Saaz and Styrian Goldings really wake up the palate, but are blended in nicely without the bite. Nice job Weyerbacher!
