It's not very often where I'm at a brewery and I see a mead on the menu. That all changed on a slippery, winter night where some friends and I headed into the woods of Missouri to have dinner at the Weston Brewing Company and I saw an apple mead on the beer menu.

By reading the description, it seems as if the folks at Weston got together with some honey farmers and combined the mead and some cider and came out with this concoction that I thought was pretty good.

The mead came out and was very crisp and clear looking. Although the light was dim, I could see it had a golden yellow color to it. There was a very light carbonation level and almost nothing in the way of a head. Being rather new to the mead world, I'm not sure if this is standard. The aroma was that of wine and apples with the apples being more of the dominant aroma. Although it was good, it wasn't anything overbearing or what I'd call super fruity.

The mead drank very well though and that was what I enjoyed the most about it. It was very close to being like drinking a wine, but without all the dryness or tartness that you typically find in most white wines. This was much more on the fruity and light side. There was an initial tartness that you could taste in the front end of the mead, but on the back end you got this wonderfully sweet apple flavor that really was enjoyable.

Bottom line, this is more of a sipping drink, rather than a beer with dinner drink, but that's OK. I really enjoyed trying something new and it went great with my dinner.
