Looks dark, tastes light. It's Ontario's favourite dark lager. A dark beer that is slowly brewed with Canadian grown malted barley, specialty coloured malts, imported hops and pure cultured brewers yeast. Waterloo Dark is for the beer drinker who likes a dark craft brewed beer without the filling heaviness. Dark lagers are enjoyed all year long, and they're not as filling as ales. Waterloo Dark will cut some of the heaviness in sauce-based meat dishes. Waterloo Dark is an equally perfect beer to go with appetizers suitable for watching sports games, or used as an actual ingredient when preparing a meal. Try it, you'll see why Waterloo Dark has won awards at the World Cup of Beer, Canadian Brewing Awards and the Ontario Brewing Awards.

Pours a large foamy beige head and has a dark amber appearance. Weak lacing. Aromas are wheaty and grainy malts. Flavours are light malts, a bit of nutty and toasty malts as well. Light earthy and herbal hops in the mix too. Light-medium bodied with average retention. Watery mouthfeel. Easy to drink but with not much character to stand out. Not bad.

To take a note from the brewers description, I will create context for what this beer aims for. "This brew looks dark but tastes light!" Brrrrrr. Shivers. Smells like a corn filled malty lager, drinking from the can one would never guess that this was a dark beer. For a "micro" this is really bizzarre stuff. Carbonated and tart and a bit off tasting. This to me is where the "tin" taste comes from when people talk about cans, cause thats what this beer in fact tastes like. yuk. drained.

I used to really like this beer before I started "drinking" beer! Looks pretty enough...has a dark brown amber hue; is very clear. Tan head that dissipates quickly leaving a tiny bit of lacing. Smells weakly of sweet malt. Has a very dry, empty taste...quite an eye opener when I think back to my university days. I'm glad I just bought one can.

Pours dark brown with red hues. Vanilla colored head vanishes quickly leaving a small amount of lace. Aroma is sweet malt and it almost has a wine smell. Thin to medium mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Malty flavour and a dry finish. I probably won't buy again.

Bottle: Poured a clear above average brown color lager with a large foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of lightly sweet caramel malt. Taste is also dominated by lightly sweet malt note. Definitely too thin for the style with some average carbonation. Refreshing but a bit thin and lacing some flavour.

I'm still not too sure what to make of the wild pig on the bottle. What does it have to do with dark beer...or Waterloo? An amber coloured lager that is clearly darker than the old Amber Dry. The aroma is weak with some sweet malty aroma. The mouthfeel is thin and watery. The taste is just as non-existent.

The beer poured a dark reddish-brown into the glass with little head, and constant effervescence. What head there was, was gone in the blink of an eye. The aroma was weak with malt. The mouthfeel was thick and full-bodied. The taste was bland for a dark beer, some malt flavour, but not much else. -

What's this all about? It started well, with a rich, dark amber colour but it all went downhill from there. Head was conspicuous by its abesence, and there was a very faint aroma of perhaps some malt. Taste was slightly malt, but not much else. Mouthfeel was seriously thin, and no aftertaste to speak of. This cannot be my either my last review of 2006 nor my first of 2007. Gotta do better than this!

This cheap schwarzbier pours a dark red-brown colour with a good creamy tanned head that has decent retention and nice thick lacing. The carbonation is quite active with tiny bubbles. The scent is mild with malt at first, then turns into a mix of roasted malt and not-so-good sourness. Smooth mouthfeel with a slight crispiness to it. The taste is mild too, with some little molasses very well-hidden and some corn. Overall, it is one of the better brews from Brick Brewing, but for the style, I much prefer the Kostritzer and the Escousse. This is a dark lager to be enjoyed from the bottle. Notes: now in 2012, available in cans, and much better overall.
