P-47 Warbird Wheat is a traditional German-style wheat beer, known as "hefeweizen." I brewed the original P-47 recipe at home in a single 5 gallon batch in 1999 for my best friend X Ecker. X and I were squadron mates in the Air National Guard and we served together during Operation Desert Storm. Years prior to that, while on active duty in the Air Force, X was an A-10 "Warthog" pilot at RAF Bentwaters in England. During this tour, X and his squadron mates spent two week rotations flying out of their Forward Operating Location (FOL) in Leipheim, Germany. As with countless other airman serving in Germany after World War II, X discovered traditional unfiltered Bavarian wheat beer. When I asked X what kind of beer he wanted me to brew for him, X didn't hesitate. He said simply, "How about a hefeweizen?" Three weeks later, X and I were enjoying the classic fragrance and refreshment that can only be found in a traditional unfiltered wheat beer. As he did in Germany, X had his with a lemon wedge. I had mine without. Either way, the beer was fantastic, and today it serves as the formula for Warbird Brewing Company's P-47 Warbird Wheat. Brewed with Bavarian Pilsner and Wheat Malt, German Hallertau hops, and Hefeweizen yeast, P-47 Warbird Wheat has the distinctive fragrance of a traditional hefeweizen. Because it is lightly hopped, it is extremely refreshing and easy to enjoy. If you've never had an unfiltered wheat beer, you might be surprised that the beer is not clear, like our T-6 Red Ale. Don't worry. There's nothing wrong. Traditional German-style wheat beers are not filtered, so you actually see the bit of yeast left behind after the brewing process. One of the great distinctive characters of German-style wheat beers is the incredible fragrance. You will smell notes of clove balanced with banana, and even a touch of vanilla. This is a great beer for those who appreciate wine, because it has so much of the fragrance associated with many good wines. It is also an incredibly refreshing beer and can be enjoyed with all types of food. This is an absolutely beautiful beer, so enjoy! Or as they say in Bavaria, "Prost!" Nice wheat, fairly simple and it doesn’t have the big flavors typically associated with a genuine Hefeweizen. Pours really cloudy with a nice golden-orange body. Big white top with sporadic, spotty lacing. Light wheat aroma with a faint perfume scent as well as some apricot and banana. On the thin side with a good finish. Crisp, sweetened wheat flavor coupled by banana, orange and a dry tangy bite.

This is one good wheat beer, the color was right for the style and the taste was fantastic, rightly balanced with cloves not overpowering. This was my favorite wheat beer i have had from a brewery.
