Scratch #15-2008 is our first collaborative beer in the Scratch series. We teamed up with St. Thomas Roasters of Linglestown to create a Double Espresso Oatmeal Stout. The double in the name refers to the espresso (not the alcohol). Scratch #15’s espresso blend is a medium city-type roast featuring beans from three continents. St. Thomas Roasters roasted and ground the beans; we used them in our hopback. At the end of the boil the hot wort passed through the espresso beans to give a lush coffee espresso nose and hints of coffee flavor. Chocolate, roasted and caramel malt flavors stand out, while the addition of oats gives Scratch #15 a full, round mouth feel. Galena and Kent Goldings hops are added to balance the overall flavor and not drive up the bitterness. The head retention diminishes quickly because of the oils from the espresso beans.

A solid pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces a four-finger thick, dense, nicely browned head. The beer is a deep black color that shows flashes of brilliantly clear, ruby hues when held up to the light. The aroma smells of sharp, somewhat acidic burnt notes up front, but quickly starts to pick up a rich toasted malt character, solid aromatics of fresh ground coffee, a berry-like coffee note, a touch of roasted nuttiness and perhaps a touch of dark cocoa. The aroma is a bit smoother than I was expecting, which is good as I don't like when burnt / roast notes get overly harsh.
Somewhat light bodied up front, but picks up touch of viscous texture towards the middle; this remains a light brew over all though. The coffee flavors come on strong, with lots of roasted flavors, charred acidity and a lingering burnt coffee bitterness. This has some toasted bread crust notes and dark chocolate flavors to it up front that get quickly overwhelmed by the coffee flavors. The finish at times has a roasted nuttiness to it. This is one of those beers that would likely vastly improve from the hand pump; the existing carbonation (which is not overly aggressive but certainly quite a bit more than from the cask) accentuates the burnt acidity and makes this sharper than it needs to be. When the carbonation is aggressively released the beer becomes more balanced and smooth.
While the beer comes off as a bit unbalanced from the overly roasty coffee flavors, it still drinks really well and is quite drinkable. A bit more malt would definitely balance out the coffee better but this beer would then lose the quaffability and light body that is so nice; I am definitely torn on the body of this beer, is it just right or too little, I can't really decide.
