To appeal to the hard drinking populace of Czarist Russia, English brewers developed this very strong (9% abv) and rich style of beer. Black and viscous, and heavily hopped, it became a favorite of the Imperial court, from which it takes its name.

09.25.04 Tap(nitro) at NH. Black with thick brown head that fades to coat. Very big and very roasty. Smooth velvet body, full mouthfeel, but palate is somehow not satisfying. Vinous and quite alcoholic. A surprisingly good BP impy stout. Bitter hints of caramelized sugars. Body is lovely, but not for this brew. Not pitchy, unctuous, or coating. Thanks alot, nitro tap.
Sampled again 01.13.05, Princeton. Similar description to previous attempt, but this has some more favorable points. New points of note are licorice that presides throughout and a lingering hop bite (pine, wood, earth). The body seems more satisfying than I remembered, and yet it’s a lower alcohol version. Well done, Triumph!

Tap at the brewpub, New Hope. Deep brown with the signature tan head. Nitro tap. Roasty alcohol aroma. Full bodied beer. Smooth chocolate flavor. Warming. Drinkable. Excellent beer. Alcohol is strong but its good.

I like to judge brewers on the big beers that they brew. This may be right or wrong but since I don’t care for the small stuff, that’s all I got. That being said, this stuff was one of the highlights of the Stoudts Festival for me. The Triumph guys knew me by name by the time it was all said and done. Rich, dark, coffee and chocolate were all over this stuff. Sweet and dry at the same time. Time to take a road trip to Princeton.

The reps from Triumph at the Stoudts event called this 11%. Poured opaque black with no head. Aroma of figs, and other dark fruits, chocolate, roasted malts, and cofffee. Chocolate and coffee taste, light alcohol taste. The only problem here is that it might be too thin.
