August 2013: 500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5%. Clear brown to copper colour, moderate white head. Malty aroma with notes of toffee, caramel and nuts, hints of over-ripe fruits. The flavour is also malty but not very sweet, some fruity notes, hints of oak, nuts and caramel, fairly bitter and slightly roasty finish. More "contemporary" in style than Traquair House Ale and Jacobite Ale, but this one is also a fine beer.

I've tried this beer both in Canada and Scotland, and neither time was a delight for this beer. It pours a rea dark ruby red with aroimatic notes of sweet malt, roasted malt, and spices. The flavour is little sweet with hints of caramel and chocolate. Not very balanced.

I tried this beer on September 11, 2009 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a dark reddish brown with a thin white head that quickly became a ring. The aroma was sweet malt, weak molasses, and some sweet spices. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was sweet caramel malt, some nutty hints, and a bitter finish. A very good beer.

The beer I had was WELL past it's prime. Oxidation in the nose and palate really outshined anything this beer might have resembeled at one time. But it was still a decent beer. Maybe not th4e Scotch Ale it might have been, but perhaps a more subdued Old Ale. Aroma was oxidation, caramel, with some subtle spiciness. Appearance was dark amber, slightly hazy with very little head to speak of. Mouthfeel was slightly thick. Flavor was raisny, oxidized malts, leather with a lingering bitter finish. It wasn't bad, but clearly well past it's prime.

Dark rubyish amber colour with big beige creamy head, leaves a lot of lace. Aroma is malts, hops and slight caramel. Flavour is roasted malts, caramel and flowery hops. Slight leathery and oaky hints in aftertaste, along with roasted malts and hops.

Brown colour, low white head. Ashy hops, wet stones and grass in aroma. Light smokey and plastic flavour. Small ashy and yeasty notes. Short ashy aftertaste

Overall rating on this beer slips due to inconsistency - some samples are excellent while others turn out a bit bland for some reason. Deep amber color is a highlight for this one. Head is a little on the short side. Aroma is also very short, but when it's there it has a nice, nutty smell. The palate is malty up front with a chocolate covered cherry middle and a strong bitter finish. When this beer is good it is very good and worth seeking out.

Amber coloured with a slim, foamy, off-white head. Malty, caramel and fruity aroma. Malty and fruity with a hoppy finish. Light to medium mouthfeel. Pretty good, if unremarkable.

Sample at the Mondiale 2005: Poured a medium brown color ale with medium head with limited retention. Aroma is quite sweet with some spicy notes and some nice malt. Taste is sweeter the expected with some honey. Body is average and carbonation is low. Average Scottish ale.
