The abbey beer Steenbrugge Wit-Blanche is a wheat beer brewed with 40% unmalted wheat and 60% malt. It has a refreshing taste and a fruity, slightly smoked fermentation aroma in combination with the subtle Bruges herb mixture 'gruut', with an emphasis on coriander and cura?ao. Beer of high fermentation. The secret of Steenbrugge abbey beer is the unique ?gruut? blend of herbs and spices, which gives the beer its delicious flavour. Every town used to have its own beer, each with its own individual character. In Bruges that character was determined by a blend of herbs and spices that brewers were obliged to purchase from the city?s herbs and spices shop, known as the ?Gruuthuse?. In Steenbrugge Wit-Blanche this medieval tradition is continued. Steenbrugge Wit-Blanche is fermented with its own Steenbrugge yeast strain of high fermentation, which gives a phenolic smoked aroma together with a perceptible fruitiness. 330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 5.0%. Hazy straw colour, large white head. Moderate aroma of wheat, dust, curacao orange peel and coriander seeds. Slightly sweet and citric flavour with the same elements, low bitterness.

Hazy golden yellow with decent white foam head, lacing to glass. A refreshing citrus aroma, yet not too strong. Taste is more like a tripel then a white beer, interesting. Aftertaste is good lasting (Velp 201207)

A hazy yellow colored beer with a big foamy textured, white head rising above. There's some hang time. Settles eventually into a thick ringlet. I get some citrus, banana in the nose. There's some spice to that banan-citrus in the tasting. Nice full, smooth body.

This pours with a frothy, initially three-finger thick, pale, off-white colored head. The beer is a milky, straw yellow color that shows a bit of haze, and a bright, pale gold color when held up to the light. The aroma smells of grassy wheat, earthy coriander with some leading orange zest and trailing lemon zest notes. The spices are well balanced by the earthy, grassy, grain-like wheat character.
Dry tasting, but this does have a touch of grain sweetness to it. There is a nice tartness to the finish as well as a peppery carbonic bite that balances the sweet grain character up front. Earthy coriander lightly spices the flavor profile, but does not run rough-shod over this beer as so often happens in many a poor made Wit. There is a certain fruitiness here that reminds me a bit of tropical fruit, perhaps even some kiwi. This has a very light body to it, definitely a refreshing beer to be drinking in hot weather, though it is not watery. The grain contributes a touch of straw / dried-hay flavors. There is a touch of phenolic clove notes to the finish that mixes in with a light Meyer Lemon zest character.
A decent Witbier, that any lover of the style will enjoy. It is perhaps missing a touch of depth to the flavor, but I like that the spicing is on the subtle side.

Draught@Gastropub Nordic, Tampere. Hazy yellow colour, mediumsized white head. Aroma is quite dishwatery along with some spices. Flavour is wheat, spices, coriander and some rather sweet candyish notes. Wellbalanced and refreshing as for the flavour.
