Back to the roots: In the summer of 2014, Brewery St. Bernardus will bring one of their oldest beers back to the market. When the brewery was founded in 1946 to brew and commercialize the beers of the Trappist Monks of Westvleteren, the brewery received 4 recipes from them: Abt 12, Prior 8, Pater 6 and Extra 4. In the 70's this 'Enkel' or 'Single' style got out of fashion and the production of the Extra 4 was discontinued. In origin, the Extra 4 was brewed by the Monks for their own consumption, but this beer is seldom sold in Belgium or abroad. The Extra 4 is brewed in the classic 'single' style and is a light gold colored beer with a ABV of only 4.8%. It is a beer of high fermentation, bottle conditioned and full of flavours. It is brewed with more hops than usual for the other beers of Brewery St. Bernardus. The Extra 4 will be available in limited quantities each year on May 15 for all customers in Belgium and abroad. Available in 33cl and 20L kegs. Did you know: Single or 'Enkel' is the base of all Trappist and Abbey Ales. Later a Double and a Tripel were added to the range. These names refer to the amount of malt (x2, x3) that was used in those days to brew this type of beer.

330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 4.8%. Nearly clear pale blonde colour, large white head. Aroma of Belgian ale yeast, white peaches, pear drops, mild spices, hints of sweat. Flavour of ale yeast and mild spices, hints of stewed white fruits, moderate herbal hops.

330ml bottle that pours a hazy, light-golden colour with a big white frothy head, very-good retention and patches a thick foamy lacing. Sweet aromas of sugars and fruity bananas from wheat. A nice slightly-dryer mouthfeel. Made as an easy drinking Belgian beer, and it is. Flavours are mild, with decent hops in the finish. Kind of happier for a Belgian ale, but at least the sweetness and spiciness is down for the style. Decent.

The beer pours a hazy straw gold colour with a generous white bubbly head which lasts forever! The aroma is yeast, grass, citrus, and spices. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is yeast, grains, with some funk in the finish. A solid Belgian patersbier! -

Nothing special.... Draws golden-yellow with a moderate bubbly white head with good retention and lacing. Decent carbonation. Mild yeasty-grassy aroma and flavor.

A bright golden yellow in color with a big sudsy textured, white head rising above. There's great hang time on the head. A thin ringlet is left. A citric and yeasty funk are in the nose as they are in the taste. Light, crisp and effervescent.

Opaque golden yellow with lasting, lacing white foam head. Aroma is citrus like, some barley. Looks like a Weissen. Taste indeed has strong citrus presence, but also strong barley, nice fresh beer. (Velp 201407)
