2009 version from PfoxyJohn. Reddish brown pour with a tight tan head that reduces to a constant cap leaving ample lacing. Ripe rich fruits and big earthy hops meet an abundance of maltiness in this warming BarleyWine in an extremely cool bottle. Big, heavy, hoppy & malty... It is what it's supposed to be. Thank you John.

Brewed in 2006. I'm sure it has been on the shelf of my "local" bottle shop since then. I thought, given the style, that maybe this has aged nicely. Whatever the case, I would have expected more. Even though this is an English Barleywine, It is still awfully sweet. I would have liked to see more hop bottom end to this, but maybe all those oils broke down into nothing before I bought this. Has a pretty strong sherry character, none of the complex and subtle flavors I would have expected from the style, but maybe they break down with age too. Pours a cloudy iced tea color, with no head. The extremely light-to-bon existeant carbonation is a surprise too. With all the wax on the cap, there is no way this depressurized. Ah well, for $5, it was worth a shot...not going to clean out the store's stock on this one. When (IF!) I find one fresh, I'll give it another shot.

brewed in 2007, but from the wax, its the 2009 release .. . Pours a deep caramel, good foam .. . lots of smooth sugar, light molasses, and caramel .. . sticky mouth and a deep finish .. . it was enjoyable .. . Daisy, please insert Onslow back into the car...

Pours a slightly hazy to clear orange/amber with a very thin head and no lacing whatsoever. In every respect it was only average to slightly above. Very drinkable, but nothing nearly as exciting and complex as the bottle - with metal label plate and wax seal - would suggest. Decent, but over-priced... don't go out of your way for this one.

Pours a bright coloured clear orangeish amber with a fairly large head. No lacing, aroma is a little glassy...(?) flavor is strong, definately resembles a lighter port, perhaps a little brandy as well. Carmely, soft nutty character, with a hint of smokey oak. decent brew, but i expected a little more.

With the special wax seal on the bottle, you'd think you were getting some kind of special release. Well, unforunately, nothing really special at all about this beer. But, not all hope is lost. It's decent drinking and as long as you don't go into this beer expecting something huge and complex, you'll get along just fine.

The appearance of the beer is a medium amber in color, suprisingly clear with a thin off-white head. Aroma is sweet caramel malts, a bit of lighter fruits (pears and apples) and some alcohol. It's not overly done in any way, but there's nothing really exciting going on in the nose. Flavors were really sweet, some dried apricots and alcohol. It was a decent beer and it went down fairly quickly. Drinking a 10%'er makes it a bit difficult to keep drinking, and the nature of this beer isn't one to make you forget you've got something else better in the fride. Get it but don't expect much.

This barley wine pours a deep reddish amber color from a 16oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head, good lacing. Aroma is caramel, apples, fruity and sweet. A medium to full bodied barley wine. The malts are fruity and sweet, lots of apples and other fruits. There is a touch of caramel and toffee, but mostly sweetness. The hops are earthy and mild. There are lots of overripe fruit flavors and its kind of sickeningly sweet. Reminds me more of a Madeira Sherry than a beer. The malt sweet needs to be balanced by some hop presence of some additional carbonation or something. Seems a little thin tasting for a barley wine. This one just doesn’t do anything for me, heading for a drainpour. Mouthfeel is thin. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is sweet.

I was surprised to find this brewmaster's series at my local store. Basically, I really enjoyed this beer. Nice looking reddish-copper color with a thin head, the mouthfeel is smooth and silky. THe flavor is malty, with some wine-like notes. It's extremely drinkable.

[2005] Poured a clear, orange amber color with a medium sized, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of cherries, musty apples, caramel malts, light oak, nuts, and some alcohol as well. Taste of much of the same, red apples, caramel, dried fruits, citrus and light alcohol.
