Rich and complex, with notes of roasted coffee, chocolate, and caramel. We've made this year's winter seasonal brew with more oats and flaked barley than the previous year's brew, be have continued to use East Kent Goldings hops as the only hop in this unique beer. Our Sourdough Stout has a bit more body than some other oatmeal stouts, but you need that when it's 40 below zero outside! Limited availability in draft & bottles in winter.

My trip across Alaska took me to the Silver Gulch Brewing Company in Fox, Alaska while I was visiting Fairbanks. The nice facility sits around 10 miles outside of Fairbanks and has a beautiful bar and dining area. While there I had a Sourdough Stout and this is my review.

The beer was brought out at a very nice temperature that was not too cold. Unfortunately, even at that temperature, there really wasn't much in the way of aroma. Light hints of coffee might have come across my nose, but it wasn't anything I really picked up on. The color was dark brown and even had a light hue of red to it when held up to the light. There was a dirty tan head on it as well that soon disappeared. I was looking for something a little darker, but thats OK.

When I finally got around to sampling the beer, the beer really wasn't as smooth as I would expect for a stout. It had a medium amount of carbonation and wasn't creamy at all. The flavor was the only area that I thought was interesting. You could definitely pick up on the East Kent Golding hops used in the beer, along with a strongly roasted coffee taste as well. The strongly roasted coffee flavor gave it a bitter edge.

Overall this beer wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be and left a little disappointed. None of the sweet chocolate or caramel promised in the description were there.
