This abbey ale is a collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the monks, at the Abbey of New Clairvaux. Belgian inspired golden ales are noted for their devilish personalities, but there is nothing mischievous about this complex ale. It is brilliant golden and layered with notes of summery apple and pear and pepperv spice from the use of a traditional Belgian yeast strain. A portion of proceeds from this ale goes toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Ovila chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery 1931 and planned use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearst’s, plans crumbled. these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey.

Sierra Nevada Ovila Golden has a thick, spongy, white head and an initially clear, bubbly, golden appearance, with hazes up, once one pours in the bottom swished third of the bottle. The aroma is very pungent, sweet, bready, and fruity, and the flavor is similar, with sour and citrus aspects. The bitterness level is pretty low, and the sediment brings in a yeasty quality. Mouthfeel is medium, and Sierra Nevada Ovila Golden finishes crisp, spritzy, and easily drinkable. The alcohol level really does not show much with this beer.

Sampled on 12/21/2012. This Belgian Strong Ale pours a slightly hazy medium to light orange gold color from the 750ml cork and caged bottle. Large sized white foamy head with good retention and long lasting lacing. The aroma is fruity and sweet, estery and slightly spicy. A medium bodied Golden Belgian Strong Ale. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are earthy. Nice carbonation. Nice fruity/estery golden ale with a nice spiciness at the finish. Very nice sipping beer. Hides the alcohol very well. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Apple and pear, and a good dose of spicy yeast dominate both the aroma and flavor. Golden Belgians usually not being my cup of tea, this was quite good, and another hit for Sierra Nevada in the Ovila line. Only fault - it was overcarbonated to the point the cork shot off like a bullet, but the palate was actually quite soft and nice after a little swirling.

Comes out of the tap a beautiful, hazy honey-golden with a fairly thick ivory white head that leaves some generous lacing. Strong aroma is quite fruity, mainly pear and banana, with hints of malt and yeast. Superb flavor has a malty core and strong notes of yeast, fruit - again, banana and pear - and more than a hint of butterscotch. Smooth, firm body has plenty of fizz and life. A truly lip-smacking Belgian that is worth a hunt.
