Never been a big fan of Saranac but this stout seems to have improved with age.Black with a good head but thins out quickly.Aroma and flavour were of dark chocolate, burnt coffee, roasted malts and burnt toast.Mouthfeel was a little thin for the style.Oops! the burnt toast was my breakfast.

Feb19th 2012 .. 9:14pm .. . light burnt wood, light bovril, tar, and big screen black .. . light to solid mouthfeel .. . 6miles in, then we can all have breakfast .. . tasty and really slick, very well done- i liked and enjoyed this and was surprised at its quality- nothing earth shattering, but enjoyable... . . Nice bike! Where do you put the batteries?

Poured black with a thin head and visable legs on the glass from the alcohol. The aroma was strong of alcohol. I thought this took a good deal away from the beer. This had a decent stout bitterness but was hurt by the strong flavors and aromas. I must admit that I don't care for the "big beers"

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9
Presentation: Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Appearance: It pours very thick and slowly into the glass. Its color is dark black with dark brown high lights near the edges of the glass. You could say that it has the appearance of used motor oil. The head is tan in color, thick and foamy. It has good retention and leaves behind light tan rings of lace. Smell: The aroma is full of dark roasted malts with a light herbal hops note off in the distance. Taste/Mouth feel: The flavor has a deep roasted malt character with notes of dark toast, espresso, burnt caramel and baker's chocolate. Hop flavors blend in well under the deep malty character of this stout and add a solid dose of bitterness. It is very thick, creamy and slick in texture with a full body and soft carbonation. Notes: This is defiantly a heavy hitter with good depth from the FX Matt Breweries Saranac line. The 9% abv. is well hidden and the silky smooth texture makes it an easy sipping full bodied beer. This is a must try for stout lovers.

This poured a black color with a tan head. The aroma contains roasted coffee, chocolate, and licorice. Some sour notes in the flavor which also contains some chocolate and coffee. Overall this was better than I expected from my name sake brewery.

Pours dark, dark brown with a late emerging head which spilled all over my counter, nice lacing. Wonderful aroma of chocolate, coffee and roast. A bit thin on the tongue, but not a bad effort. Chocolate, coffee and some burned notes, a bit astingent and bitter, but some sweetness to balance. More than I would have expected from Saranac. Good show!

Pours black with a thick dark tan head, eventually slims down to a thin layer with sporadic lacing. Aroma is full of mocha, espresso, and molasses, with some rummy booziness showing through. Some spicy anise seed up front, bitter chocolate to follow, then an in your face bottom of the pot coffee roastedness, black peper, and burnt wood. Dries out a ton midpalate to the finish, and is bordering on astringent. Not sure what happened to all the sweetness I picked up in the nose, but it's sorely missed on the palate.
