Throughout history, beer of somewhat higher alcohol and richness has been enjoyed for the winter holidays, when old friends get together to enjoy the season. Wassail, a festival to celebrate winter and the beer that goes with it, predates the Christian era. Winter Welcome is vintage-dated with a special label each year. Serve in a traditional tankard for the holidays. Honey-amber-colored, creamy head of small bubbles, floral aroma and delicious malt flavor with great finesse.

Expected more of a winter warmer ,but at 6% alcohol,I was shooting too high.A nice amber appearence with very little off white head that was gone in a blink.Ditto the lacing.Modereately malty with a hint of butterscotch.Halfway thru I realized that this one was marked 2004-2005,gonna look for 2005-2006 ,that year might make a big difference. All in all pleasant enough to try again

Pours out a medium clear brown with a nic thick head. The aroma is just clean and malty. The mouthfeel is only average the taste is pretty plain. It's not bad but it's nothing special. It's just a average beer not at all something special for the holidays.

Pours a small amount of foamy head and has a clear, light copper appearance. Aromas of light malts, hops and some spices. Flavours of roasted malts, goldings hops, light spices, a touch of cinnamon and even a little bit of a syrup, like maple but very faint. Fairly bland mouthfeel, not much feeling. Not bad but not much of a winter warming beer. A bit disappointing.

Pours a somewhat lighter amber with a 2 finger head that goes down at a decent pace. Ok carbonation. Aroma is malty and sweet. taste is not very strong actually. A little bland. Not much taste to it at all. kinda metallic. That is all, carry on.

Appearance and aroma weigh this beer down a bit, otherwise is slightly above average. For the style though, average at best. Shocking b/c this is the first beer that didn't quite work for me from Samuel Smith. Flavor is decent, balanced ok. Maybe a tad too sweet with the spices but hop finish cuts it down. More like a spiced ESB versus an "English Strong Ale" as listed here. Aroma is subpar, not much with the appearance (a light semi-cloudy brown). On clearance for a buck, so aroma and flavor could be not so fresh. Not really eager to try this again, but worth the dollar for the experience and review.

Above average, not way above, but a solid offering. Tasty at room temperature, clean flavours, nice colour. Better than most winter beers, though I question it being classified as an English strong ale in this day and age. Easy enough to drink, but a bit boring, in aroma and flavor.

Attractive, clear light amber colour, moderately bubbly with an off-white head that lingered for a while. Not really sure what it smells like. A bitter initial bite, though creamy smooth mouth feel. Improves as I get lower in the glass.

Pretty above average, and a great value for the price. Good beer. Definately seasonal. Hazy amber on the pour and a head that dissapates quick, but gives a great aroma. Ginger, cinnamon, sweet oak, candied cherries, nutmeg, caramel, and malt. Definately alot going on, but not busy. Would make a good session brew. Palate is much the same, I just happen to be eating a Cadbury Cream Egg, and followed it with a pull on this brew. Wow!!! Good winter warmer and one I will be looking for again. Finish is velvet smooth and abrupt. Please, Sir, may I have some more???

Not sure I really like this beer, Sam Adams winter is better. The pour is really nice, the head opaque, copper color body. The aroma was more yeast than anything. Once it warmed a bit I could taste malt. The mouthfeel and finish not so impressive.

A very good Winter Ale spicey a little and moderately carbonated which i like from english beer in general. Also lightly fruity on the palate and a well balance harmonious i should say offering by Samuel smith's.

Here we go again. Sour Sam Smith's ale. At least this one has some spice to it. Other than thet, it is a typical SS ale. Come on! I expect more from a high class brewer.
