Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980. Platinum Medal, World Champion Oatmeal Stout—World Beer Championships.

This beer is excellent. I drank it so fast I almost forgot to enjoy it. It has a nice color, the head retention is good, not great. Not a strong nose, but it does get better when allowed to warm up a little. It has nice caramel and nice roasted flavors along with a little bitterness makes it complex and enjoyable. Terribly easy to drink. I highly recommend this one.

Bottle. Colour – A very dark brown pour, almost black, with a creamy chocolate milk coloured head. Aroma – There is definitely oats in the mix, with some roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, and caramel. Mouthfeel – Creamy, well carbonated, full bodied in the truest sense of the term. Flavour – roasted malt notes with dark chocolate, coffee, and caramel. There is a bitter finish to balance the caramel sweetness. A great beer.

Bottle. Pours black with a thick creamy mocha head. Aroma of roasted malt, milk chocolate, oatmeal, dark fruits and roasted nuts. Taste of roasted malt, oatmeal, milk chocolate, caramel and dark fruits. Smooth, creamy texture and full bodied. A roasted, chocolatey finish. A really nice, rich stout.

This is the only oatmeal beer I've ever drank. It taste really good and makes me interested in trying others. I've enjoyed several times now with cigars. And I would advise anyone to give this a try.

Pours a thick foamy, light beige head and has a dark brown appearance. Fairly weak lacing. Light bready and toasty malt aromas with the oatmeal coming through in the finish. Even a bit of vanilla. Mild toasty, nutty flavours with hints of caramel, coffee, very light chocolate notes. Oatmeal flavour is pretty noticeable but still weak. Creamy and chalky mouthfeel. Pretty average carbonation. Not too bad. Too much of a watery mouthfeel. Was expecting something with more substance and/or thickness.

What a great stout for the price. The pour was aromatic with hints of coffee, caramel and the roasted malts. The head was dark and creamy and lasted forever while enjoying it. It was flavorful with a good blending of the roasted malts, a hint of caramel and dark chocolate taste. This was great from a mouthfeel with a creamy sensation. A good choice for an everyday stout drinker with its lower alcohol.

I'm not a fan of stout beers. This beer pours almost coal black, with a nice tan thick head, which hangs around for quite some time. A roasted coffee aroma ariss from the glass. To much of a coffee taste in the beer as well (note i don't like coffee either). It does have a wonderful mouth feel.

Pours a dark chocolatly brown/black with a big cleam head to it that takes its time. Aroma is typical of its style with a tad of what almost seems friuty. Taste is of oatmeal, cholcolate, coffee, with a hint of vanilla that finishes off smooth and a tad dry. I like it.

What a beautiful sight. Black with a large persistent, foamy tan head. Great lacing. Aroma of lightly roasted malt, weak coffee and nutty. The flavour is Yumm, sweet malts, chocolate and creamy coffee. Medium-full body, smooth and silky. A great beer. What did we do before 1980

Something slightly sour that comes standard in the Sam Smith brews. Puchased at Beermongers Portland. Poured into my beermongers glass. Very pretty. Black, tan head, soap a bit, big bubbles. Some smoke, something hickory. Dark grain but not burnt at all. Taste is cleaner than imagined, and not completely to my happiness. Less body than expected also, but really smooth yet complex. Nothing in this beer ever jumps out, its just a smooth fine boned courdoroy, the harder you press against it, the more you feel, but you never really identify the limit of the cloth/beer. Lengths of introspection here, but the slight hint of dryness coupled with hidden alcohol encourages consumption over brooding. The sour lingers, and it is the only off putting part of the beer. Something gently lactic when it warms.
