Samuel Adams Stony Brook Red: This unique brew defies traditional beer style definition. The rich, malty brew combines notes of tart fruit from the yeast with a toasty oak character from the barrel aging. The long dry finish is almost wine-like. This is a beer that is satisfying on its own and also pairs well with many foods such as braised or roasted meats, beef stews and strong salty cheeses. Samuel Adams Stony Brook Red starts out as a strong red ale fermented with a Belgian style ale yeast. This younger ale is blended with over 50% of our Samuel Adams Kosmic Mother Funk®. The Kosmic Mother Funk is a Belgian ale that we age in oak casks and tanks for over 6 months. The beer in the oak vessels undergoes a secondary fermentation with brettanomyces yeasts and lactobacillus to give the beer a rich tropical fruit note and some sourness. Stony Brook Red's resulting blend has an earthy, fruity, and estery character. The beer is also bottle conditioned which creates a secondary fermentation in the bottle giving the beer an extra smooth and balanced flavor

A big thanks to my neighbor Joey for this beer - VERY GOOD! This was the Boston Beer Company's first honest attempt at a sour beer and they did a really good job. Puckers the cheeks. It only departs from its Belgian counterparts in abv. This beer is much higher abv than a typical Belgian sour - alcohol hidden well.

Samuel Adams brews can be a hit and miss. This one did well with a style I enjoy. A mahogany colored beer with a big reddish beige colored, sudsy textured head rising above. There's good hang time on the head. A thin ringlet is left. Sour, vinegary notes dominate. Some sweet-sour fruit notes in the tasting. Some woodsiness Slick bodied on the tongie

Purchased at Shaw's in Saco, Maine on a trip there. Has a great creamy mocha head with lacing all-around. Dark brown, cola-looking brew. Well-blended flavours between the roasted malts and sourness. Smells sweet, sour and roasted, reminding me of wine. Overall, not too crazy sour, as the roastiness takes care of business. Alcohol well-hidden, lots of character. Goes down very-well !

Browny red pour with a short head, reduced to a constant ring, minimal lacing. Nice mellow sour aromas of balsamic vinegar, red wine, some berries and fruits, woodsy oak, some caramel and malts. Flavor is weak compared to other sours and compared to the nose of this beer. Light, very light sour quality, light fruits, tart then sweet, light oak woods; a bit of a let-down. Still a good introductory beer to those how want to try a sour but might be hesitant.

what makes this a fruit beer - the fruitiness of the yeast. Kinda going after a flanders type sour, even says so on the bottle. Anywho...the depth of the color and complexity of this brew caight me off guard a little. Tart, slighly sweet and sour, with a bit of cherry, lots of oak, and even a little leather and tobacco that added another layer of complexity to this very enjoyable brew. Not quite traditional, but tasty and very well done.

Malty aroma has a tart fruity overtone and a hint of horehound. Pours a clear, dark mahogany with a thick wheat head. Malty flavor has woody and tart fruity notes, giving it an almost wine-like nature. Smooth texture has good fizz and rather wine-like body, leaving a tart and woody finish. Distinctive, enjoyable, tasty.

Pours a hazy cranberry juice color with a small 1/2 inch white-red head that fades to an oily film on the top of the beer. Small spots of lacing slowly drip back down into the remaining beer. Smell is of sour berries, vinegar, and funky /musty combo. A very mouthwatering smell. Taste is of sour berries, red wine/balsalmic vinegar, and the funk/must flavor that wild ales have. Very tasty and refreshing. This beer has good carbonation with a crisp and clean mouthfeel.

sampled on 9/25/10. 750ml bottle with mitch. pours a clear reddish color. thin head. aroma is fruity and slightly tart. medium body. taste is sour, cherry, balanced by some sweet maltiness. a little wood flavor and maybe a hint of funk comes out as it warms. nice carbonation. mouthfeel is full and round. aftertaste is slightly tart. i could sip this all night. i would have liked to seen wider distribution on these barrel room collection beers. they could have been a nice introduction to barrel aged beers or even sour ale for a wider audience.

Sampled on 9/25/2010. This sour/wild ale pours a deep red color from a 750ml corked and caged bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head, with nice lacing and good retention. The aroma is fruity and slightly tart. A medium bodied wild ale. The malts are fruity, cherry and sweet. The hops are herbal and earthy. Nice mellow sour ale. The fruitiness is balanced by the sour/tart and some subtle wood flavors. As it warms the tartness seems to intensify. Decent carbonation. A great sipping beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly tart.
