Russ has been brewing for three years but this was his first venture into creating a recipe from scratch. The result of his hard work is a big malty stout with notes of chocolate and coffee that carry through to a velvety finish with hints of roasted cocoa. The richness is balanced by subtle citrus and pine notes from the American hops that add a touch of bitterness to this deep and satisfying brew.

    Pours out in night blackness with a big frothy textured, brown head rising above. There's decent hang time on the head. It settles into a thick ringlet and persistent foamy cap. Deep smell of roasted malt. A little bitterness from that roastiness and coffee. Full bodied, smooth.

    This "American Stout" reminds me of a lot of foreign extra stouts. About the same strength and has that bitterness, not like the typical American sweet stouts. Not top quality, but has some good flavor and ok balance. Hops are coming in a little more towards the end of the sample. This year's longshots are falling a little short of the prior winners though.
