Rated May 2008. Courtesy of wetherel who opened this gem at the fordest tasting sharing it with fordest, toncatcher, padrefan98 and of course wetherel. Pours amber-ish with tan head. It has a big old aroma with lots of tasty cherries that begin sweet and become more sour as the aromatic draw continues. Wow, lots of cherries. The flavor is also Wow. The taste begins balanced with sweet cherries and cherry tartness that is smooth and becomes even smoother toward the finish with mildly growing tartness. Smooth with hidden yeast spiciness (I ended up with some of dregs of this amazing beer) and more cherry sweetness. It is a little tough to describe due to how well it has aged and how the notes have melded and blended. 1996 vintage courtesy of dpflanzer, wow, thanks again David. Pours deep dark brown with amber edges and white head. It has a big inviting aroma of sweet cherries, mild caramel, notes of nuts, port wine notes, mild tart cherry fruit flesh and sugar sweet tartness. With more than a decade of age the nose of this beer is blended and smooth leaving other aromatic notes impossible for me to describe. Just like the nose the taste is smooth blended smoothness with sweet cherries, mild cherry fruit flesh vegetal and tartness. There’s also a sugar sweet tart candy note mixed with faint caramel and moves to the finish with increasing dryness without becoming too dry.

I had a chance to try a shot glass of the original Alexander many moons ago and it was quite good, but not enough to rate. The cork says this is a 2018 bottle. It pours a beautiful translucent cherry red with a tan coloured cap and plenty of bubble to keep that cap alive. Aroma is vinegar, cherries, wood, and yeast. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with above average carbonation, and a ‘dry’ mouthfeel as well. Flavour starts off with sweet cherry notes, before giving way to tart cherries, vinegar, and burnt wood. The burnt wood flavour lingers on long afterwards. This beer is dangerously VERY drinkable. -

Shared 750 ml bottle at local tasting, many thanks to gunnar. ABV is 5.6%. Red colour, slightly peachy head. Lovely vinous aroma and flavour, notes of red wine vinegar and berries, marzipan and cherries. Very complex and enjoyable.

@ PINT tasting - Clear red, white small foam ring remaining. Overwhelming fruit aroma - cherry. Sweet cherry taste, lasting quite long, light sour. Getting used to beer. (Arnhem 201612)

New version, freaking amazed to see it at my local beer market shelves. Red-brown translucent pour with short ring head. Sour cherries and fruits, hint of SweetTarts, oak, pinch of vineous and vinegar, but mostly traitor up deliciousness in the nose a palette. Love.

2016 release and I would guess not the aroma of the original based on other reviews. Also, side by side with regular Rodenbach, I'd take the regular version. This one is very cherry forward of course, also finishes a bit dryer and more crisp than regular Rodenbach.

I haven't rated a beer in a while but after perusing the top 100 and looking at some old beer notes, I thought I'd give a few some kind words. How can one not love this beer? Beautiful in the glass. Vibrant, bloody brown. Nose of sweet-sour goodness. Taste of delicate fruit flavors and balanced sour notes. Gorgeous beer. Sampled at Beermongers, 11/16/2012

I've been waiting for my 2,000th typed review to post this beer. I figure 2,000 is a pretty significant milestone in rating, and deserves a whale of a beer. This was everything I had hoped it would be.
The beer pours out a beautiful purple/brown bruise like of a color (almost looking like a light grape soda) with basically nearly zero head. Aroma is really something wonderful. Strong notes of wet wood, sweet vermouth/sherry, light barnyard/funk, and something that seemed reminiscent of red wine vinegar??
The flavor starts out with a strong cherry/port like sweetness but it quickly balanced by an even tartness, layers of vanilla/oak/earth and caramel chews. It really is complex and far removed (IMO) from what the original beer must have tasted like fresh. Now it' oxidation seems to work well with the character of the beer and creates something like a really fine brandy/port/sweet vermouth/Flemish concoction. Yowza! -

I had this beer many times over the last decade and when it fresh, it was amazing sour beer. Lots of sour cherries and wheatish malt. Sadly, does not age well. Was definitely the best sour out there when it was fresh!

Malt vinegar and wooden aroma. I smell cherries too. Looks like the malt vinegar I use on my fish at Long John Silvers. Right now I am thankful that this is a small bottle. Taste is so much better than I expected. There's lots of sweet and sour cherries. Taste is familiar but intriguing. Finish is subdued. WOody, tart and sweet. Wow! So much better than I expected. I admit it. I was all wrong. I'll have a bigger bottle please!
