The bottom-fermented beer, made of dark malz, whereby the type-fair color results, has a very good foam quality. The smell is purely and malzaromatisch, the taste vollmundig and pleasantly malzaromatisch. The total character is harmoniously and very well rounded off.

A big mahogany colored beer with a heathy foamy white head rising above. There's some hang time. It settles eventually into a thick ringlet and light film. The nose is light, light malt and grass. The tasting bolder, caramelized malt some banana and some grassy notes. Full bodied and smooth. Very Good

Pours a dark mahogany with some hints of red. Thick light tan head, and thick lacing. Aroma of coffee beans, banana, some citrus, caramel malts, and mild spices. The mouthfeel is smooth, rich, and full-bodied. Flavors of coffee, banana, some citrus, mint, and mild spices. Delicious!

A brisk pour produces an almost four-finger thick, lightly amber tinged, tan colored head that just crests the top of my 25cl tulip glass. The beer is a murky, dark amber / red color but shows a brilliantly clear, cranberry stained, bright amber color when held up to the light. The aroma is quite malt focused as this is noticeable upon pouring the beer. Sweet, caramelized malt notes are backed by ample toasty malt notes. Aromas of biscuits, lightly toasted – yet hardy dark German bread, light raisin / berry notes and even a touch of lightly roasted coffee in the finish. I really like how malty and rich this beer’s nose is; quite satiating all by itself.
Sweet tasting up front, but actually surprisingly light bodied for how rich the aroma was. Quaffable just like a good Dunkel should be and it has a nice, persistent carbonation that adds a bit of a prickly texture to the brew. Richly toasted malt notes evoke flavors of chewy, whole grain bread, light raisin notes. Perhaps a bit thin up front, but the rich, albeit not thick, malt character soaks into the palate and boosts the perceived richness of this brew. A touch of age is starting to show through the malt here; it contributes a light sherry note that only seems to add to the complexity more than anything.
A tasty brew, I really like the deep maltiness that this beer attains. Definitely a satisfying drinking experience.

Another fine example of the dunkel style, one that is admitedly a little boring. The pour was standard chestnut brown in color, nice offwhite frothy head with excellent retention, just saw there, somewhat pillowy. The aroma was nutty and chocolate. The flavor was nutty, grassy, chocolate, herbal/earthy, caramel, and also had a touch of coffee. Mouthfeel was full for the style, yet well attenuated and somewhat dry even thin in the big scheme of the beer world. Nice stuff, probably close to amazing fresh on tap in Germany.

Dark brown color. Medium white foamy head. Aroma is malty, biscuity and sweet. A lighter bodied Dunkel. Malts are biscuity and caramel. Hops are slightly spicy. Nicely balanced. Light and refreshing. Hints of chocolate, caramel and nutty. Spritzy carbonation. Nice beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

My second of two 500mL beers from this brewery -- and I think the Dunkel ended up tasting about as interesting as I had suspected after trying out the Helles. That is to say, "not too interesting", IMO.
Granted, there were no significant faults with this -- nothing glaringly obvious that the aroma was off, or the flavor profile was bad, mind you. But, at the same time, there really wasn't much to go on with this one on the postive side of things, either.
Big billowy head of foam, atop a staid dark brown body. Rather indifferent aroma. Adequate mouthfeel, that made sure the roasted/grainyness of the flavor profile wasn't hidden away. A little acrid in the finish (metallic, perhaps?), but not unduely so.
Adequate all-around, but I do have to mark down the overall drinkability a notch, only due to my sheer boredom with this beer. While I'm not a participant in the whole "ale vs. lager" debates, I do have to think that it's beers like this snoozer that make me appreciate a nicely bitter IPA so much more....
