Teaming up with Terrapin Beer Co. for the first time, Shmaltz Brewing joins the tribe as a production partner for Reunion '11. We brew Reunion each year in memory of out dear friend and partner in the venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of the Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www. imbcr.org). This year's beer is a dark, complex ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla, and chili peppers. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle spicy aroma. The flavor begins with complex malt overtones and quickly gives way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisying bliss. Just when you thought it was over, the heat from the chilies sneaks in and coats your tongue with tantalizing heat. Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped to honor Virginia's memory. Cheers - Pete and Alan.

Sampled on 7/7/2012. This American Strong Ale pours a medium to dark black color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, fruity, sweet, with some chocolate and peppers. A medium bodied American Strong Ale. The malts are caramel, chocolate, coffee and sweet. The hops are earthy. Nice carbonation. A nice balance between the chocolate and chili flavors. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

The thing that I really enjoy about American strong ale's, is the freedom of brewers to stretch their legs and do someting kind of out of the lines with brewing ingredients, techniques, and so on. This beer's just a really nice blend of vanilla, coffee, raisins, chiles, and brown sugar in both palate and aroma. A little bit more residual sweetness might have made a good beer a great beer. I enjoyed this one so much, it's inspired me to create a homebrewed clone. He'Brew continues to make really tasty beer. Note: This beer was brewed for Schmaltz Brewing, not at Terrapin. -

Comes out of the bottle a clear dark cola brown with a thick, fine-bubbled and rather persistent light tan head that leaves some respectable lacing. Strong aroma is spicy with malty, nutty, earthy and caramel notes. Malty flavor has spicy, nutty, caramel and molasses notes as well as a peppery zing. Average-bodied texture is fairly fizzy with needle-sharp jabs from the pepper. Fortunately, the chili zing is just another player in this delightful beer rather than trying to dominate both taste and texture - they make it feel as if small fireworks are going off on one's tongue. If you are adventurous when it comes to beer, grab a bottle!

It pours a very dark brown with a thin tan head and fairly copious lacing. An aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, orange and citrus notes, light raisin and molasses, and vanilla and other spices. The mouthfeel is smooth and rich. Flavors of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, orange and citrus, light raisin and molasses, vanilla, and chilies and spices. Excellent! and very interesting touch with the chilies!
