Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhook's signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. It's eminently drinkable style has established Redhook ESB as a benchmark brew in the amber ale category. Redhook ESB is made with a careful blend of two-row Klages and Caramel 60 barley malts and two hop varieties: Willamette and U.S.-grown Tettnang. This rich, copper-colored ale is styled by a complex balance between the bitterness of the hops and the sweetness of a heavier caramel malting. A late addition of hops highlights the fresh aroma. The well-rounded finish of our ESB makes it a wonderful companion to all manner of fowl and is great with grilled meats, game and cheeses.

September 2014: Sample from bottle at Vecturamesse. Brown colour, Some caramel in aroma and flavour. The flavour is otherwise too bland for an ESB, with too moderate hops. Will re-rate when I get a full bottle.

355ml bottle into schooner glass. More than a Cornflakes aroma, perhaps Frosties! Hazy amber beer with thin film on top. A few bubbles. Full bodied, sweet malt taste. Slight zing in the mouth. Alcohol and bitterness noticeable in the finish. Not great and nothing like an ESB.

My second Red Hook. Very fresh, brewed on 12/19/06. Label is a little boring not like the one pictured here. Pours lighter brownish orange with a froth on top, no head. Smells a little sweet. Taste is like a cross between a lager and an ale. Starts off pretty gentleman-like then proceeds to give you a little bitter bite on the back of the throat. Creamy carbonation is present but much below average. Bitterness is medium strong and hangs for a while. Not as good as yards extra special but it is on par or better than ol speckled hen, #6, bass ale and Whitbread. I also had this on tap at the Coney Island in Slippery Rock lately.

12oz bottle. Clear caramel colour with a small white head. Caramel aroma, malty and lightly hoppy. Sweet and caramely with some bitterness. Ok, but on the sweet side.

About time I got around to rating this one. This is one of the earliest US craft beers I can remember trying back around ’90. I remember wondering if it would be too bitter since it is an extra special bitter. Pours copper with weak white head. The meek aroma seems to put out a whimper of spicy hops a sense of malt sweetness and little else. The taste holds up moderate notes of spicy hops, some floral hops and then a thin layer of straight up grapefruit hop bitterness. The grapefruit note grows to a tepid level by midway. It fades into the finish but allows for a bit of grapefruit hop bitterness to hang in there for a while into the after taste.

Small offwhite head, short lived with a touch of stringy lace left behind. hazy gold color. Yeasty, fruity nose. Light body, malt and hops. A small yeast bite? Finish is dry, lightly fruity. ZZZZZZZZZZ.

I picked this beer up from the Kroger on Brambleton in Roanoke, Virginia. It was part of a mixed case. This beer was a nice take on a very favorite style of mine. While it was good, the Brits OWN this style.

pour was a medium amber with a yellow hue and an average sized white head that receded down to a thin layer and small collar of residue with poor lacing. The aroma was rather strong of toasted caramel malts and a mildly sweet yeast with notes of toffee, butterscotch and citrus. The taste was very malty and a slightly sweet with a hint of toffee early on and then had a mild citrus bitterness. The mouthfeel was light in body with a mildly syrupy texture and a lively carbonation.
