In the fall of 2004 we created a Pumpkin Ale at the request of the Town of Windsor's Pumpkin Festival and a fall classic was born. We brew this ale using Howard Dill's world famous Atlantic Giant Pumpkins with a special blend of spices - this of course in addition to the usual ingredients: highest quality malted grains, hops, water and yeast. It's the next best thing to pumpkin pie. This one goes fast so make sure you mark your calendar for this October. (Available October until it's gone - hopefully after Hallowe'en) For Beer Geeks IBU's - 15 Hops - Cascade, Warrior, Pumpkin. Malts - Pale, Wheat. Water - Soft Colour - 2.2°L

Label has a jack-o-lantern, and clipped in best before date. "Propeller Brewing Company, Halifax's first microbrewery, is pleased to offer our limited edition Pumpkin Ale. Propeller Pumpkin Ale is made with malted barley, hops, yeast and water with real pumpkin and spices - and as always, is naturally aged with no preservatives." Pours a slightly cloudy orange color, starts with a white fizzy head that quickly disappears. Some small floaties in the bottom of the glass. Smells exactly like I was hoping. Pumpkin aroma, like a pie (not the vegetable), and lots of spices. This is great. Taste - just like pumpkin pie in beer form. As mentioned, my first pumpkin beer, so nothing to compare it to. I was really impressed. Lots of flavor, but balanced well against the true beer taste. Pumpkin, spices, cinnamon, but no artificial taste. Not much as far as mouthfeel, but didn't care. The flavor carries this one.

Poured a hazed golden ale in the glass with a rocky 2 finger cap that reduced to a surface lace...laces the glass sides well. There are little pumpkin "floaties" in the brew...this is good for flavor but murder on tap lines. Aromas are nice: Cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, honey-like sweetness, musky-pumpkin tones...smells delicious! Up front the non cloying pumpkin pie tastes mingle with a light biscuity malt then the drink mellows and more ale character ( like a light pale) are detected midway through... the finish is clean and drying ( a bit of wheat in the recipe perhaps?) spices and pumpkin mingle here in a final dance on the palate and leave a lingering pumpkin pie (complete with biscuit crust) decernment....spicey dry after taste. A nice lighter pumpkin-spice pale ale...not cloying, slightly drying in the end and with a nice crisp biscuit malt snap to it. If it has a fault, it is that it is a tad thin of body compared to other Pumpkin ales but it is flavorful and very drinkable.
