This Canada Day Canadians in every province will have the opportunity to celebrate with a very special beer. It’s called the Coast to Coastless Imperial ESB, and it’s a collaborative effort from four Canadian brewers to celebrate the spread of the craft beer movement from coast to coast–and all of the provinces in between. Garrison Brewing Co. (NS), Microbrasserie Le Trou du Diable (QC), Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery (ON) and Phillips Brewing Co. (BC) all participated in the ‘quad-laboration’, coming together to craft a recipe designed to reflect Canada itself. It is an Extra Special Bitter, a style with roots that trace back to England, but as an amped up imperial version it has a strong spirit that is purely Canadian. A hefty body, full of biscuity and caramel malts is edged with earthy tea-like hop character. It is robust enough to pay tribute to the size of our country with the creative flair emblematic of the craft beer industry. As a quad-laboration the project also embodies the unique craft brewing culture of collaboration and mutual support. According to Peter Chido of Flying Monkeys, “We respect each other, we root for each other, we drink each others beers, and when we can we brew together!” So this Canada Day raise a glass to the spirit of collaboration and enjoy the one thing unites us Canadians as much as hockey: a cold hand-crafted beer.

Brown Flying Monkeys wine-style bottle from the LCBO. Pours a clean deep amber colour with a ruby hue. Big beige-yellow frothy head that stays long and leaves thick creamy lacing. Fruity aromas over bread malts, caramel and mild alcohol. The taste is hoppy overpowering the malts. Good bitterness with a little dryness in the finish. Mild caramel lingers. Hints of apples. Quite the bite this brew offers. Interesting to have such a strong ESB and a nice collaboration between 4 greats.

The beer pours a translucent dark copper colour with a creamy long lasting tan coloured head. The aroma is roasted malt, caramel, smoked wood and alcohol - not much in the way of hops which is surprising for a Flying Monkeys product. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbnonation. The flavour is roasted malt, smoked wood notes, alcohol, and some peppery spiciness. Decent, but not worth the price tag. -

From Phillips Brewing, yet comes in the usual 750ml champagne like Flying Monkeys bottles. Pours a big frothy beige head, almost like a milkshake, and dissipates to a nice thin cap. Has an amber coppery appearance. Aromas are mainly toasty and bready malts, a bit sweet. Flavours are also mostly malty, bready and light roasted malts, hints of caramel, biscuit and toffee. Has a little bit of the citrus bitterness in there. Great retention and has a smooth, silky mouthfeel.

Ruby/brown coloured pour with a foamy tan head that doesn't last too long. Minimal lacing. Fruity, weak tea aroma. Flavour is Malt forward, with strong black tea, dark fruit and wood. Also tastes a bit herbal with a hint of pepper. Amped up ESB is ok but I think one is enough for me.

Bomber from Central City. Clear copper pour under a massive, fluffy beige head. Malt forward nose, nothing else really there. Above average mouthfeel. Flavour quite nice, like a boozy ESB.
