Our 2006 Winter Brew Ale is a French-style Biere de Noel (Christmas Ale). The defining character is a rich, complex malt taste. A soft vanilla aroma blends with spicy and nutty malt notes.

KCC 7: Saturnalia! Sampled at Hard Times Café's Winter Beer Tasting 2006. 7.3% abv. 23 IBUs. Bottled112906. Amber with a 1/2" of foam and some lace. At $100 per pound, the vanilla bean makes a strong, if pricey impact on the aroma. Very little hop profile in the taste. Flavor is all spicy / nutty French malt and soft vanilla. Creamy and smooth body. Unexpected and pleasant peach notes in the aftertaste.Very nice for a change of pace. Tad sweet for anything but a sipping brew. Well done.

NorCal tasting Apr 07 - This might just my first beer where I could pick up nothing but diacytl in the nose. I mean it's like sticking your nose right into a Country Crock tub and taking a huge whiff. It really stepped on anything else that might have been struggling to make it's way out of my glass. Appearance is copper in color with a nice one-finger head. Flavors were damn near mostly butter as well, but it had a buttery vanilla that saved it from having an even lower score. Pretty horrid stuff. Avoid if possible.

Ick. Not good. Beer poured a watery color version of a typical caramel...virtually no head even with a vigorous pour. Aroma was of wet sweat socks. The flavor was malty sweet, some honey and a thick mediciny vanilla like from some dollar store creamsicle. Really not good.

Definately different. Pours well with strong copper color, firm head, but only moderate retention. Very good balance of maltiness and vanilla. Never would've thought of vanilla, but it works--but only if you are ready for it.

Pours a medium copper with a low head that dissipates quickly. No lacing to speak of. Malty aroma, mouthfeel has a bit of hop, flavor is malty with spicey tones and a lick of vanilla that sticks to your lips. Not bad, not bad at all.
