With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

(12oz. bottle) Good carbonation upon opening. Pours very full head. Damn near overflowed the rim with foam. Looks like I could float a dime on top (if I were into wasting good beer.). Somewhat dark brown body which light penetrates. Light "Belgian" aroma. Not overpowering. Average body and mouth feel. Nice raisin flavor which lingers in the mouth, chased with dark brown sugar. Slight warming in the throat, but not overly like a higher alcohol brew would be. .

Very nice. Just a tad sweet for me, otherwise I’d drink this all the time.Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7
Bottle. Pours dark amber. Aroma of caramel and sweet dried fruits with hints of alcohol. Just a hint of bitterness in the finish.

Rated Oct. 2006. 0.750L Bottle. Pours brown with thin off white head. Medium aroma of brown sugar, dark fruit, spice (maybe cinnamon), roasted malts and caramel. The flavor is complex. There are notes beating my tongue from every direction. I taste dark fruit, a woody smokiness, a hint of vanilla, brown sugar and spice. Wow, this one’s bangin’ on all cylinders. I think the assorted flavors go really well together. Nicely done.

Pours out a very dark cloudy brown with no head. The aroma is deep malt and fruity raisin and fig smell. The mouthfeel is smooth and thick. The taste is a heavy sweet malt, wheat and maple.

Pours a very cloudy copper color with a one finger off white head that lofts a bit. Carbonation out the ass in this one. Aroma is quite potent. Hints of oak, vanilla, and spices. Taste is very metallic with some sweet hints. Sorry to say that I could not drink it. Hopefully this was a bad bottle.

Seriously thought I'd reviewed this before. Guess not? My cellared bottle pours murky brown with practically no head. Sweet caramel and raisin aroma with mild lemon tang, maybe a bit of bread and vanilla. Flavor is classic Belgian goodness: rich dark fruits and bread, raisins, dates, cherries, caramel, molasses, a little coffee. Substantial, smooth, tingly, sticky. Reminds me why I love Belgians. A toast to my beloved Servais-Théodore Pinckaers! Blessed repose and memory eternal, brother!

A nice belgian-style ale. Fast-disappearing head and no sediment in the bottle. Not complaints, just observations. It's a bit pricey, but a good brew and part of the profits go to music education. Thelonius Monk! I'm a fan of Eric Dolphy, I'd like to see a brew made in his honor someday :)
