We sidekicked this chili beer with a half rack of ribs and half chicken, both topped with spicy barbecue sauce we ordered from The Pit Stop located at Gilbert's Corner in Aldie, VA. I believe that if I had not had the BBQ masterpieces to enjoy with this beer, I would not have experienced the good taste of this brew! This is one beer that the right pairing definitely brought it justice!

Sampled on 1/1/2015. This spiced ale pours a medium to dark orange gold color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head with decent retention and nice lacing. The aroma is bready, fruity and sweet, some citrus and some wood, with some chilies. A medium bodied spiced ale. The malts are fruit and sweet, a touch tropical. The hops are herbal, earthy and spicy. A touch of wood, with some chilies in the background. Not a lot of heat, but they are definitely there. A touch of cedar(?) and wood upfront with the chilies at the finish. Interesting beer. Good carbonation. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly spicy.

Vool, very unique brew. Never had this combination of flavors and aroma. Fruity hops and Belgian yeast aroma. Some bubble gum and light peppers. Weird but cool. Slightly sweet on the palate. Unexpected, but again, cool. The wood is light as is the peppers but they are there. Hops are more of a fruity boquet than bitter. This is insanely complex yet easy drinking. Nice job guys.

32 oz. growler fill @ ABC/Lake Mary, FL. Sort of like a mildy hopped, spicy IPA. Definitely has some heat to it once you get into half a glass or so. Medium orange to copper appearance. Citrus aromas and flavors, light tropical fruit notes...with a peppery feel at the end from the chili. Some smoke and wood flavor also from the cedar. I was concerned that this may be a miss for me, but worth the try for sure.

On tap at Flying Saucer, Nashville. True golden pour, tight short head, nice lacing. Nice Belgian-y yeasty aroma, sweet, floral and spicy hops presence, then the chilies kick in a bit, very mildly though, with a lightly boozy linger. It's OK but I'm glad I didn't buy a bottle.

Pours a clear orangy amber with a thick but effervescent white head. Aroma is fruity and sweet with a peppery hint. Flavor is mainly fruity, a little sweet; the pepper component is subdued so it doesn't assault your tongue, but you definitely know that some zingy pepper is in there. A hint of caramel makes its appearance as well. Texture is fairly fizzy but a tad thin. OK, not a great one, but give it a try.

    22oz bottle -

A very strange, strong beer with some pretty big swings of aroma and flavor. The cedar seems to dominate the aroma for me with just a smidge of underlying bell pepper-like note and a touch of fruit. Grapefruity and cedar on the palate, with just a hint of any chili pepper presence, both in flavor and spice level. Very, very low spice level and the pepper presence is more vegetal. Not bad.

22 oz bottle. Pours clear golden orange with a big meringue like white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is very subdued - some sweet malt and mild green pepper. Some perfumey notes come out as it warms.

The flavor is some sweet woody notes and some mild chile spice with a bitter spice finish. The mouthfeel is light bodied and very watery.

Overall, an OK mild chile beer. A bit watery.
