The color of just-polished mahogany crowned with a tightly laced, mousse-like head, our Abbey Belgian Ale raises eyebrows just on sight alone. An ethereal swirl of banana, spice and smoky aromas compels further study. Cross the liquid threshold and discover flavors evoking ripe fig, caramel, coffee and clove. Settle into the solace of Abbey’s other-worldly finish. This is ale consecration. Abbey, the biggest medal collector in the New Belgium portfolio, is categorized as a Belgian style “dubbel” or “Double Ale.” This complex ale, along with Trippel, is very true to style of the beers brewed in Belgium where the monks produce beers to support their abbey. Dubbels tend to be darker, with a heavier malt profile. Bottle conditioning produces esters that manifest as earthy or floral tones. Though excellent when paired with savory dishes, Abbey inevitably finds itself paired with dessert at dinners given by our brewery. As well, our restaurant friends are finding Abbey to be an appealing addition to their lists of ports, brandies and single malts. Abbey is worthy of being furnished as a stand alone liquid dessert, a euphoric palate enhancer in the cigar humidor, a stairway to heaven companion to chocolate, or a pleasing brain twister when served with espresso. So, settle into your favorite chair, perhaps drop the needle on some cool jazz, pour yourself an Abbey into a wide mouth glass and seriously question whether life gets any larger.

Not sure how to rate this style, but... Sweet chocolate flavor with a slightly spicy finish, makes you want to have another.

Comes out of the tap a dark, barely transparent honey brown with a thick, pale tan head. Rich aroma fills the snout with earthy, malty and grassy tones. Earthy, malty flavor has a nice alcohol bite and nutty and caramel hints. Texture is fizzy and full-bodied, leaving a tingly and earthy finish. A good one!

Light red (mohagany) they say. Very nice spice type aroma.Definitely a begian type ale with all the phenolics going on in the taste. Spicey, but not a bad after taste. Very nice beer over-all.

Pours a dark brown/amber color. Smell is of fruits, yeast, malts. Taste is good, dark fruits, lots of malts, just a touch of alcohol. Overall a high quality beer.

Ah the stash I came back with from the Hootenanny is dwindling, and I dug this one out tonight to sip on while enjoying some college hoops. Clear reddish light brown pour with a sizable head and good lacing. Medium to light bodied per style, fizzy finish. Huge esters from the yeast provide a big banana and clove influence. At times I feel this is more dunkelweizen than dubbel, but it's still tasty. Some toffee, raisins and bread to bring it back to earth.

I'm pretty sure I've had this before, but but no more than once or twice. Anyway, this bottle came via a BABOB from BluesandBBQ. Soft creamy foam, sticks to the glass. Raisins and bread in the aroma. Flavor is raisins, brown sugar, and something really sweet...like dates. A delicious dubbel, a rare treat, and always a great beer from NB. Thanks, Blues!

Nice find @ Vic's in Knoxville - new (for east Tennessee) higher gravity New Belgium beers. This one pours a clear browned amber with a slight head and delicate light lacing. Warm aromas of sweet roasted bananas, nicely warmed brown sugar, caramel, warm oaken vanilla. Taste is rich with the sweetness of caramel, brown sugar, and vanilla along with ripened bananas, hint of plums, and rummed raisins. Very very nice ale. Better as it warms. Bravo!

Fairly typical of the style, but very tasty. Pours a deep reddish-brown with a very thin head. Rich feel on the pallette. Raisen and plum flavors coupled with the floral aromas make for a very nice experience.

The typical abbey dubbel pour with its murky brown red colour and thin tan head. The aroma was rich and complex with roasted malt, plums, and yeast. The flavour is a bit thin and malty.

Brown pour with a thin tan head. Smell of chocolates and burnt sugar. Banana notes and malts in the smell and the taste. I think this beer was overly sweet for me but I will give it another go in the future.

Amber color and pours with a medium to thin sized head but pretty good retention and lacing throughout. Aroma consists of candy apples, cherry, plums, raisins, sugar. Drinks lighter and thinner than it smells but still quite good. Moderately sweet and sugary flavors showing raisins, plums, maple, yeast, vanilla and light spice. I like this one. Very drinkable and tasty.
