Had this nice duece duece with shag. Cloudy cloudy neon yellow color to it. Big time on the yeast, not that light of a flavor, had a weird undescribably funk to it.

Nevada City is in the heart of the Sierra Nevada Gold Country, near where a guy named Sutter happened to get a lucky break and find gold in 1849 -- changing forever the destiny of California. The Gold Rush came and went, and this little mountain town (where my gransparents used to live) has become less of a rough-and-tumble miner town and more of a quaint tourist trap. Nevada City has had a few microbreweries and brewpubs come and go, but the first place to establish themselves has quietly stuck around through the years. All that, and more, is why I was surprised to find a bottle of this Gold Lager at the Serv-All just down the street, here in SD.
It is rather gold-like in appearence..., a little darker than I would expect from a Lager, but that's fine. Minimal head. But the aroma. {Sigh} Talk about getting ugly early. Very much in the realm of "Lemony Fresh Dawn Dishwashing Detergent". Not horrible, mind you, but quite distracting.
The flavor profile, on the other hand, is not only distracting but just plain bad. Way-too friggin' lemony for my taste -- almost as if this was meant to emulate a Mexican Lager with 3-4 limes and lemons stuffed into the 22-oz bottle. Not too terible in the mouthfeel, but with something this loathsome in taste, drinkability comes to almost a screeching halt.
I wanted to like, this -- honest. With the cool story of a small mountain town reinventing itself, and the fact that I have fond memories of Nevada City itself, this could have been a much more positive review overall. But when the beer has as much character as Lemon-Lime soda mixed with Rolling Rock, it's hard to get too attached to it....
[I believe this brewery is now out of business]

A nice lager. Vintage 1994 which scared me. No worries. Yellow appearance with a murky yellow color. A yeasty flavor with some lemons taste. Not bad.
